About time. Since 2016, every government we’ve had has imposed ever higher taxes — and still more draconian cuts to public services — in the full knowledge they have a button they could press that could transform our ailing economy overnight. The button is marked Reverse Brexit.

There may be one or two patriotic millionaires, but there sure as hell aren’t any patriotic billionaires.

Me? I entered politics to do pointless performative crap.

💈 Today is the first reading of my Presentation Bill seeking mandatory registration for all hairdressers and barbershops in England. The Bill has genuine cross-party support and was developed on the back of an excellent Parliamentary event, co-hosted by local barber Mike Taylor...

Very good point, Matthew — I remember too the fuss that was made when Obama gently suggested ahead of the EU referendum that Brexit may not be a terribly good idea and the continual commentary on our domestic affairs we are now getting from Trump.

Compare how things were described by one of the same papers when it was talking about funding (in far smaller amounts) towards groups they weren't as politically aligned with. Even Farage wages in on one of the headlines...

Instead of using terrorist legislation to arrest harmless elderly women who take exception to seeing children being butchered in Gaza, can we please not deploy it against those who threaten RNLI volunteers and fundamental British values?

🎯 by @ellabaron.bsky.social The abuse directed towards RNLI volunteers is horrendous. Solidarity with RNLI volunteers. They are doing incredible work.

We need to get away from the idea — though I get it’s an expedient one for Islamophobes, anti-Semites and the far right generally — that members of any faith all have to be identical in every way, sharing exactly the same views and living their lives in precisely the same way.

Justin Webb is doing the ‘you’re not a *proper* Jew, are you?’ thing to Ed Miliband on the Today programme right now.

Christopher Harborne - the Reform mega donor who gave Farage £5m - is suing ex-Reform deputy leader, Ben Habib. The particulars of claim have now been published. And we need to talk about them. 1/

Tbf, no it's not. They're not wearing masks or balaclavas, so they're not *true* patriots. Apparently, real patriotism requires anonymity. 😏

The Chancellor’s optimism and his eagerness to turn the corner on a decade of stagnation and short-term growth spurts has to begin with a stated intention to join the EU, because that is the only long-term plan capable of delivering real change.

Interesting from the Financial Times. I remain of the view Burnham’s a fundamentally decent guy and the internet’s rendered his job fundamentally impossible. I’d add, too, it’s interesting no one talks of the FT closing: maybe the one paper that’s managed to keep true to itself.

What no one has asked Farage is whether any conditions were attached to Harborne’s £5m ‘gift’. I think it’s in the public interest to find out whether there’s a contract. Definitely one for journalists to ask at Reform’s conference in the week ahead.

In the EU referendum, as Governor of the Bank of England, Carney took a principled and economically literate position in the UK’s best interests. He’s now making decisions on the same basis for Canada in relation to Trump. We should follow his example. www.theguardian.com/world/ng-int...
