Not giving the full map treatment for this one but wanted to capture the new contraflow lanes. Enjoy!

New bike infrastructure alert! Check out the section of Sacramento between Montrose & Irving Park road where a new contraflow lane has been introduced to better connect neighborhoods on the NW-side. www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5GM...

A new neighborhood greenway opened up on Sacramento between Montrose and Irving Park Rd and predictably some locals are perplexed. For those that regularly bike in the area, it's obvious why Sacramento was chosen and how much of an improvement it is for northbound Irving Park Rd crossings. #bikechi

This is a project I've had in the works for a while now and I figured #WorldCarFreeDay was a good time to share it. This idea came to me while watching longform lightly edited videos of cars driving around in Asia and I thought this would be cool to do for bike rides around Chicago.

Introducing realtimerides.app. Watch continuous bike rides through the city of Chicago to get a sense of what it's really like to be a cyclist in the city. Covering a number of routes on the north and northwest side, this project seeks to present real conditions riders deal with every season.

The map integration was my way of tying all these routes together into a view that gives a sense of how they are located in the city and maybe to give folks that live near these routes a reason to give biking a shot.

If you're curious about the absence of west and south side rides, my range is currently limited to what can reasonably act as my commute to and from downtown. I would love to expand my range but for now most rides will be between the north/northwest side and downtown.

I figured it could give people a sense of what it's really like to regularly cycle around the city. I also wanted it to act as a showcase for Chicago given how often it is perceived by others that don't live here which is why some of my earliest recordings are from mid/late-2025.

one piece of advice i can share as a parent: certain phases can be really tough, but they do pass. around 18 months my son kept demanding that i condemn hasan piker. all day and night too, i was at the end of my rope. now he’s really into fire trucks. it’s always something new

Very interesting to see how boundaries deal with the river where it generally acts as a boundary but in the case of Waters ~25% is on the west side which on one hand reduces any option of neighborhood cut-throughs but on the other forces way more traffic onto Wilson/Montrose.

New: We pieced together dozens of violent incidents from the ICE agents seen in viral videos from Virginia this week. They've roamed across multiple states, but are most often working in Chicago. We also verified the identity of Martin Lagunas, the fed who pointed his gun at a woman on Monday:

Gonna alter this and add the wrinkle that the first movie is one you've watched recently: Weapons: Blood Sport Operation Hail Mary: The Passion of the Christ Coherence: Stop Making Sense Sicario: Serpico

Take a movie title, add a colon and another movie's title to make it SOUND like a sequel to the first movie! I'll go first. Big Hero 6: The Magnificent Seven The Black Hole: Event Horizon Cube: Sphere Escape Plan: Get Out The Mummy: Evil Dead Poltergeist: It Follows A Quiet Place: Silent Hill

Watching this Sandlot homage all star segment where they have a bunch of kids essentially doing a spontaneous bike bus to the all star game and like yeah I'm glad we all agree that it's an awesome idea, just sucks we don't build our cities to allow for that sort of thing in reality.

City perks: jaunt out to the suburbs involves taking the bus to the brewery near the metra stop, having a quick beer and picking up a 4 pack while waiting for the train and then a quick walk over the highway observing the rush hour gridlock knowing the train is on time and will get you there on time

Having a flashback to that time I tried to enter the trail just north of Superdawg and finding the whole trail was torn-up and deciding to briefly head east on Devon assuming there'd be another entrance. There was not.

Lena G R@lenagr.bsky.social

Hey #bikechi, do you ride the north branch trail? Do you hate having to cross 6 lanes plus a high-speed slip lane at Devon? Come join me tonight to call for better/safer! At Edgebrook elementary from 5:30-7:30pm, there’s a CDOT meeting on improving this monstrosity!

As a regular Clybourn commuter, this has me thinking of how pedestrian conflicts could partially be due to the relative rarity of protected lanes? Like, I'm hypervigilant immediately before and after this protected section but it affords me a brief moment to relax and not worry about getting killed.

Block Club Chicago@blockclubchi.bsky.social

A city report has found that Chicago's bike lanes don't hurt businesses. blockclubchi.co/4epHwpd

But these moments of relief are themselves so brief it's hard to shift to a level of vigilance that pedestrians rightly deserve before I'm back in "don't get crushed by a car" mode.

Stray thought I've been having lately: "I sure wish the president would face consequences for his actions because then it'd be easier to teach my kids that concept"

Mr. Trump sports are not semi-free on TV! Please liberate me from these owners that put these games behind a $20-$30/month paywalls!

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: The NBA Finals game you're going to, the cheapest ticket price is $8,000. Everyday Americans can't afford these sporting events. TRUMP: You can watch it on TV. It's sort of semi-free to watch it on TV. That's the way life goes.

TIL 100 start-to-end album listens is actually a very lofty goal as in the 20(!) years I've been tracking my listening habits only one album has each track with >100 plays. And my typical approach to listening to music is via albums!l, not singles. www.last.fm/user/agilesl...

Yeah, love how instead anyone can decide they're king of the road. Was driving this past week and a dude in a beamer (wearing driving gloves) decided to pass everyone in the bus lane, travel multiple blocks via alley and when I eventually turned into my alley there he was obstructing the whole thing

lumberjack wharfie@lumberjackwharfie.bsky.social

Driving in the city should feel like you're actively asking to borrow some space. Because you are. Only on the limited network of boulevards should some space be pre-allocated for you. The rest of the time you should feel like you're borrowing space from all the people outside. Because you are.

Had dinner on this stretch of Clark last night and find it ridiculous that they haven't outright banned car traffic. Every restaurant was packed indoor and out but obnoxiously loud cars and motorcycles would drive by constantly. blockclubchicago.org/2024/05/15/c...

blockclubchicago.orgClark Street Outdoor Dining Program Will Return This Summer — But Traffic Lanes Will Stay OpenThe city issued a permit to bring the popular dining program back to River North. But unlike past years, the strip will remain open to car traffic.

Funny thing about this is when I'm around unapologetic MAGA people, they constantly drop references to whatever outrage du jour is getting play on Fox and I either fail to recognize what they're talking about OR I do understand the reference forcing me to try and change the subject to something sane

Obama: "What I'm more interested in for Democrats is, do you know how to just talk to regular people like we're not in a college seminar? Can you talk in plain English to folks? And not have a bunch of gobbledygook around it. Just talk like normal people talk. 'The rent is too high.'"

Out visiting family in DuPage county and was shocked to see this particular ad airing before the Illini game.

This is basically straight up lying to the voters by Jaime Andrade’s campaign, which is smearing his opponent by false accusing them of supporting ICE. Good campaign truth squadding by @olivia0.bsky.social www.chicagotribune.com/2026/02/25/i...

Passes the "plainly state 'Abolish ICE' challenge". Seems pretty easy, but you'd be surprised by how many people can't quite pull it off.

I know the Twin Cities are on another level but when these sort of school ICE look-outs sprang up around here in the fall, we had parents volunteering to take corners in the dads WhatsApp group that primarily existed to run fantasy sports and plan things like chili cook-offs.

Apparently the owner of Beck's and Toons is also anti-bike lane. From my firsthand experience of biking down Clybourn multiple times a week, I think if Beck is concerned about traffic congestion he should not operate a business right next door to Pequod's.

The Agile Sloth@theagilesloth.com

Sucks that the owner of Carol's was complaining about those bike lanes today in response to some anti-bike lane Facebook post by the owner of Moe's Cantina.

Bears fans preparing to riot but the stadium puts Serengeti's "Dennehy" on the PA and they all calm down instantly and begin milling about harmlessly. "Keep the juice in your chops," they mutter to each other, absently if still somewhat warmly. "Keep the juice in your brats."
