This would be better than the current care allowance cliff edge, but tapering a social security payment at a rate of £1 per £1 earned is an effective 100% income tax. Benefit tapers should be no steeper than the marginal income tax rate of the highest earners. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I'm at my most future-optimist when it comes to medical advances. I know people who were told in the 90s they'd be dead in a decade and who are still around today. I, myself, would not have survived being born a decade before I was.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

The unspoken caveat to all of the checklist items is "assuming you are rich enough to be able to afford it". Community preparedness is far stronger, far more resilient and far fairer than telling everyone that they're on their own.

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Every politician who signed, clapped and cheered and then who failed to implement or actively resisted the measures required to meet this target should consider how they'd defend themselves against a future charge of ecocide.

A major United Nations climate report says, for the first time, that the world has lost its chance to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. That was a key goal of the 2015 Paris climate accord aimed at limiting the worst effects of the climate crisis.

The cost of carbon pollution is about $2,000 per tonne or $860 per barrel. Far higher than the sale price of the barrel. This means that a company or government not paying to avoid, mitigate or repair that damage is dumping the cost onto someone else. i.e. all of us. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

It is particularly good to read for folk who are outwith (or not sufficiently within) the political party bubble and applies to all parties (I encountered it within the Greens too back when I was a member).

Campaigners have to work out where the pressure points are to get policies to jump the gaps and then how to apply that pressure. Otherwise even policies that have overwhelming or even unanimous support at conference and are perfectly within the power of the government to do can still be ignored.

Amanda Bland (MSP for Central Scotland and Lothians West) has become the first MSP to quit Reform, for reasons as yet unknown. Telt ye's the numbers would be down before Christmas! (I am back from holiday now but catchup on by-elections in that period will come after I'm rested up)

After the elections in May there was a pool going on how long it would take for resignations or expulsions to result in Reform losing their status as joint 2nd largest party in Holyrood with Labour. I reckoned "before Christmas" but did anyone have "Oct 19th"? www.thenational.scot/news/2664870...

Find it just so typical that rather than Scotland's media explore what public ownership of busses means to the public, or how it works outside of Scotland - or even how it works in our own capital city - the amplified central voices are reactionary businessmen.

That should certainly be the trigger for all governments in Europe to eliminate their dependence on MS, and, indeed, ALL US tech companies, because Apple and Google have bent the knee in other ways.

And here's the kicker: Microsoft has terminated the M365 and Outlook access of international public officials whose official acts made Trump angry.

A good way to discover where you are on the Left-Right political spectrum is, when presented with scenarios like this, to ask: "Which should take precedence - human rights or property rights?"
