I'm a few hours in to DQII (just assembled my full party) and I can see why it's maligned compared to DQI. It's certainly isn't bad but DQI feels like this perfect little closed system, almost like a terrarium, while DQII is kind of a cookie cutter turn-based RPG. Still fun !
