When people call for “censorship resistance” in social networks, I’m not sure they realise how unpleasant a social network without filtering and takedowns would be

most people don’t realize how much we clean up compared to how much slips through. watching logs of stuff getting actioned is kind of insane.

I used to think Kubernetes was complex machinery solving scalability problems I would never have. I was wrong. Kubernetes has less moving parts than my handmade deployments and is sturdier than my hand written playbooks. ergaster.org/posts/2025/0... #kubernetes #selfHosting #homelab

I wanted to move my services from a costly VPS to a Raspberry Pi in my living room. But when moving the first 2.8 GB the Raspberry Pi announced a migration time in hundreds of days! Follow me as I investigate why and if I can do anything about it. ergaster.org/posts/2025/0... #raspberrypi

ergaster.orgWhy is my Raspberry Pi 4 too slow as a server?I self-host services on a beefy server in a datacenter. Every night, Kopia performs a backup of my volumes and sends the result to a s3 bucket in Scaleway's Parisian datacenter. The VPS is expensive, ...

I didn't think I would ever find a useful personal growth book, but Deep Work was different. I expected a grind mindset book, and I've found one that makes a case for undistracted work, backed by science. A helpful tool in my quest to reclaim focus! ergaster.org/posts/2025/0...

ergaster.orgDeep Work reconciled me with personal growth booksI'm usually not a huge fan of personal growth books. I think most books of this genre are 300 pages long when all the content would fit on 20. I read _Deep Work_ by Cal Newport, with an open but…

I’m sorry. You can all be mad at journalists for this or whatever. And maybe in some cases it’s deserved. But this is a high-risk profession that’s dying. There’s little support for most working journalists who still have jobs. When you blame “the media,” blame executives. Not workers.

I've always struggled to find hardware that matches my need. I want to strike the right balance between durable and expandable, I want portable equipment that I can carry with me, and I want my gear to play nicely with each other. I've started reviewing my gear at

Steady progress on the list of gear I use or have used. I have a markdown file per item, with some information in the frontmatter, and a review in the body. The consistency of the data is enforced by @astro.build 's content API. It is so much fun to use, I love this framework.

The Light Phone III checks many boxes on my wish list for a better companion device that actually respects its owner, but has show-stoppers. And if there's one thing I've learned with the Librem 5 it's that with pre-orders you need to keep your expectations low. www.thelightphone.com/lightiii

Open source is all about collaboration. Rockstars are all about personal gratification and domination. They’re one of the worst things that can happen to an open source community.

As we head into the holiday season, it is a great time to revisit this great advice: Have no more than two drinks at a party. My own advice: Have a glass of water in between them, and then switch to seltzer with lime. I do not always follow my own advice, and when I do not, I always regret it.

“Live each day as if it’s your last” is not great advice, actually? There’s so much you have to work on to support others slowly over time that you wouldn’t do in this model. “Live each day as if it counts towards a cumulative future that can impact many people” doesn’t sound as good though.

BlueSky has just got me thinking about so many social media habits that I never really questioned on Twitter because, well, that's just the internet. In fact, it doesn't have to be. We don't all have to be snarky, disingenuous, bad-faith, better-than-thee assholes. Nor do we have to accept it.
