Now that I've signed the contract and its properly official, very excited to announce that I'm writing a book for Bloomsbury Academic titled: Space, the Final Resource Frontier? The Governance of Planetary and Extraplanetary Natural Resources which should be published sometime in 2028 (ish)

I do think a 'practical' leftyism could make a bigger thing about the social licence to operate idea - the original idea of corporate personhood was that it was a social contract not a licence to do whatever the hell you wanted, you got limited liability but you had to be a good citizen!

Anthony Zacharzewski@anthonyzach.be

Counterpoint: CEOs should look at their companies as if they needed to provide a service for every citizen, constantly renew their social licence to operate, and plan for the long term wellbeing of the whole country. www.ft.com/content/8255...

If you want to go for dodgy medical metaphors, it’s not about reopening Brexit wounds, it’s about breaking and resetting the broken bones of Brexit, which have never healed properly.

what interests me is that these twats are quite frankly cowards - its so obvious this is about race yet they can't actually bring themselves to say it, why are they hiding behind the pretence?

i dont really have an issue with the 'have three days of supplies on hand' advice but do wish it was part of a broader effort - for example doing something to prevent a repeat of the Covid panic buying, and maybe funding local government so they can lead a response effort...

ive been evacuated for 2 floods, and neither time would 3 days of supplies have been any help, a packed an accessible 'to go bag' and my cats carry case in an easy to access location was very helpful

and my togo bags not anything special, just some clothes in a water proof container, some ibuprofen and paracetamol, a few granola bars, a torch, cash, and some toiletries

It was a particularly cruel trick to have a storm and horrifically miserable conditions on the last day of British Summer Time. We should resist winter. Really show it that we don't want it. Not now. Not ever. (I may be cross-pollinating winter and fascism.)

Star Wars: Phantom Menace - only film showing at the one screen cinema in the small PA town wed just moved to, I saw it at least once a week all summer, and it was awesome

Mark Thompson@markreckons.bsky.social

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

So the UK government wants us to prepare ourselves for climate and other impacts. More water and tinned food, that kind of thing. While they approve a new gas field. So, essentially: "Get ready on your own for problems we're not trying to avoid."

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

Guardian: "Andy Burnham is kicking hippies again" The hippie's: "hey actually we're respected scientists pointing out that all these new wildfires are completely avoidable. Why do you keep calling us hippies? Would you like to look at some hockey stick graphs?"

Aurelien Mondon@aurelmondon.com

This is not about "climate campaigners" and framing it this way is totally ridiculous This is a blow to the planet and us all

theres a whole chapter in my book on space mining as speculative imaginary for this reason, like its a real idea but its also absurd and quite frankly needs naming as such

Ooh thank you for the marketing idea. You heard him, folks: The Originalism Trap is *the* rival of Alito's book Learn why his opinions deserve to be dunked on, how they became the law of the land anyway, and what we can do about it! www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/735353...

Dennie: 9780593729250 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: BooksA rallying cry for a more just approach to the law that bolsters social justice movements by throwing out originalism—the theory that judges should interpret the Constitution exactly as conservatives....

Nothing says objective book review like the author of the rival originalism book dunking on Alito's. His opinions are the law of the land. Yours are a marketing strategy with a link in bio.

Good article, I think my concern is less the prospect of WWIII and more that weve returned to a 19th century 'world of imperial violence' to borrow Lauren Benton's phrase, which doesnt preclude stumbiling into a 1914 but probably means more Ukraines and Irans. www.ft.com/content/3a56...

Alongside the decades-long gutting of institutional funding, I believe part of what has happened is the system-wide pressures to de-skill and modularize core curriculum so that the foundational courses are taught by the cheapest, largest, and least-protected population of instructors.

Good scholarship emerges from curiosity mixed with the chance to engage and ask questions of the dozens of fascinatingly intelligent faculty members who populate any given campus.

Great discourse on intellectual community this morning, and I just want to add that pushing course caps, teaching loads, and the institutional churn of structural precarity increasingly forces scholars into narrower, lonelier working conditions.

people talk about French protests as if France isnt also subject to the same neoliberal paradigm as the rest of us, like maybe they have a margianlly better welfare state (not sure if thats true) but its not like if we did that here itd be all that revolutionary because well it hasnt been there
