When you ask people about economic inequality, what crosses their minds? In a new open-access paper in Sociology, I asked 47 participants this question. Almost no one talked about money alone. Instead, they pointed to gender, race, visa status, language, and disability. 🧵👇

This Sunday, Die Linke could become Berlin’s strongest party for the first time. Importantly, its success in urban centers reflects a broader sociostructural transformation: from a party rooted in the support of production workers to one drawing disproportionate support from the new middle class.

Julius Kölzer@juliusk.bsky.social

Die Linke pulled off a surprise win in Germany’s most recent federal election and has suddenly become one of the most closely watched parties in Europe’s progressive politics. Behind the success lies a continuing structural transformation of its geographic support base. A short thread🧵

Knife crime! Pronouns! Meat bans! Some political issues lead to "hotter", more emotional and polarizing debates than others. We show how these "trigger points" reveal a contested structure of moral expectations and how they get weaponized by polarization entrepreneurs. OA @bjsociology.bsky.social 🧵

Sociology in the tradition of Karl Mannheim says that what you live through in your impressionable years tends to leave a lasting imprint. But which events do people themselves count as formative for their lives? Our data visualization in Socius answers this. 1/6 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

With COVID-19 we may be witnessing a generation in the making. It is the most named event among the young, irrespective of status, region or ideology. The young were the ones who bore the containment measures. Older people, who ran by far the highest risk of dying, hardly mention it. 6/6

Reunification matters most to older East Germans, while West Germans seldom mention it. Reunification brought real gains but also deep economic scars in the east, while West Germans barely felt an impact in their everyday life. 4/6

Political orientation, by contrast, is what structures the imprint of migration-related events. They are named most often by right-leaning respondents. Here it is not cohort or region that is crucial but political standpoint. 5/6

We asked a representative German sample in early 2025, with no answer options given. “In our country and in the world, there have been many changes and events in the past. Please name one or two such changes or events that have been particularly formative for your life.” 2/6

We hand-coded the open answers into 39 categories. Four of them cover almost half of all answers: COVID-19, the war against Ukraine, reunification, and migration. But what counts as formative depends not only on birth cohort, but also on region and political orientation. 3/6
