NEW: In recent months, 200+ cities have cancelled their Flock contracts. But how much do its surveillance cameras actually cost? What about its software add-ons? Or its drone program? I FOIA'ed + researched cities across the country to find out: www.wired.com/story/how-mu...

wired.comWhat Flock Actually Costs Cities Across the CountryWIRED examined contracts from over two dozen cities and towns that shed light on how Flock’s pricing and business model functions, and how it stacks up against its peers.

This is the kind of disgusting, clearly immoral event that authors of dystopian stories include to make it obvious when a society has lost its way

The default setting on most AI apps is for apps to use the data you input to train their models. So the AI “learns” based on what you put in, and your data influences the AI’s outputs. Deleting your data doesn’t do much, once the AI has already “learned.”

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

Can’t eat a sandwich until you subscribe to sandwiches. Can’t eat today’s sandwich until it has applied daily sandwich updates. Sandwich now has adverts even though you paid for ad-free sandwich. Can pay again to have less sandwich adverts. Now you can eat the sandwich, but it’s smaller.

I find education policy so interesting because it is tied up with what we like to believe about the American Dream, that this nation is a meritocracy where we are all just temporarily embarrassed multimillionaires and every smart and hard-working child can and will succeed. But then reality hits.

This is so funny to me. Because, yes, you can use ChatGPT to spit out 200 papers a year if you want. But to what end? What is the point? Did you spend all those years studying and working to make AI button pressing your entire career? www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

Not surprised actually. The Vatican has been consistently pro-human on AI ethics these past few years.

"Since Nebraska began using interRAI last year, the state has cut Medicaid funding to nearly 900 people with developmental disabilities, leaving many caretakers racing to overturn decisions made by an algorithm whose inner workings are largely hidden from the public."

InterRAI isn't even new! This was one of the companies i first learned about via my 1st time working w/ @cdt.org, back in 2020! Go look up "Challenging the Use of Algorithm-driven Decision-making in Benefits Determinations Affecting People with Disabilities"! What are we doing???! archive.is/d5RXZ

Every time someone asks me how to protect privacy using AI, I tell them the same thing: Don’t feed any private info into an AI app if you expect it to truly be private.

The only exception is if you are using a trustworthy application with privacy practices you truly understand, e.g., specialized apps for legal research created by legal providers and licensed with concrete protections.
