This week I attended a SCEC sponsored workshop and field trip to look at faults in the Truckee area co-led by @faultcreeper.bsky.social Here are a couple of images of the Polaris fault including an impressive offset terrace riser along the Truckee River and a linear swale/closed depression.

Some scenes from the 10/17/1999 M7.1 Hector Mine earthquake. I was flying back from doing fieldwork in Turkey related to the 8/17 Izmit earthquake. I was admiring the faults of the Mojave through the plane window with no idea that a big earthquake had happened. Found out when we landed.

I recently found some old slides I took when we were mapping the fault and had them scanned. Being flown around by the Air National Guard in those Hueys was a hoot. One of my first (but not last) earthquake responses with @kwh.bsky.social

The World’s Largest Earthquake Drill will happen on October 15 at 10:15 am! More than 10.5 million Californian’s have already registered to participate and practice the recommended earthquake safety action – DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON.

The wind must have shifted and blown some of the wildfire smoke to the south in Yosemite, because it was much clearer driving back on Hwy 120 than it was on Thurs.

Again time for real headlines “Trump blackmails nation into saving Kennedy Center after sabotaging Kennedy Center”.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

A financial resolution says President Trump has offered to “raise the necessary funds to keep the Center from bankruptcy" but says he is unlikely to lead a financial rescue without “appropriate recognition” of his role. https://wapo.st/4r97EJJ

Maybe a better headline is: “Gross mismanagement by Trump appointees shutter Kennedy Center”

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Exclusive: Leaders of the Kennedy Center say it's on the brink of bankruptcy and argue that putting President Trump's name on its facade may be the only way to avoid imminent and “certain fiscal collapse," documents show. Read more: https://wapo.st/4r97EJJ

As a homeowner, my investment in a $30 plumbing auger/snake has once again saved me from an expensive plumber house call. It is messy, frustrating at times, but a good return on investment. Highly recommended if you have the inclination to fight these home repair battles.

Currently practicing for the post-earthquake water outages because the water main on our street broke and we are without water. Imagine this scaled up by multiple orders of magnitude due to an earthquake. Hmmm, when was the last time I changed out our emergency water? Oh no…

Biden checks his watch at a ceremony and Fox does nonstop segments on it for weeks. But Trump falls asleep repeatedly at the 9/11 ceremony and they won’t even show it. But national broadcast news networks won’t show it either because that would be impolite.

Happy California Admission Day! On September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state, just two years after a discovery that changed everything: gold. The rush that followed grew California's population from under 1,000 people to nearly 100,000 in less than two years. 🧪 ⚒️

As much as I love watching the Giants on tv when we can get a game, this one is not been one I think I can keep on. From the first pitch it has been bad.

A bucket list destination for me.

Barryland in Martigny, Switzerland, is the world’s only theme park dedicated to Saint Bernards. The giant dogs were bred to serve as watchdogs and to rescue travelers exposed to the harsh winter elements in the Alps. https://wapo.st/45pzHdV
