My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Early this year, I visited Ingram, a TX town of ~1,900, to check out a tip. The area was starting to recover from its worst flood in a century. But as Latino workers drove to jobsites to help rebuild, the tipster said, a cop in a black Dodge Charger kept stopping them ... 🧵

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

Together with other scientists I’m suing the 🇺🇸 US National Institutes of Health for violating our 1st Amendment rights & censoring our health science. I’m ready to shine a light on the darkest days. Buckle up, read on. This gets pretty wild… THREAD

ACLU@aclu.org

By terminating research grants like Kelton's to censor views it doesn’t like, the NIH is blocking scientists from work that would advance public health for all of us. We're pushing back. Tell Congress to demand the NIH restore the grants and stop its censorship campaign at aclu.org/nih_censorship_

There is absolutely no viable path forward for this country that doesn’t hinge on extreme accountability for everyone involved in this administration. They’re going to whine about politicization and credulous media types will echo them, but the thing is, they’ve committed tons of obvious crimes!

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

I do not think an exec branch led by a man who thinks he is entitled to treat federal agents as an arm of his firm, refers to Somali Americans as “garbage” and has said racist things specifically about Omar is capable of neutrally applying the law to her, to put it mildly apnews.com/article/ilha...

Unsurprisingly, four days later, mathematicians have weighed in. And the results are equivocally valuable at best. More importantly the dump has flooded the zone with shit, which is precisely in line with this industry’s weaponized agnotology. Now actual scholars have to waste their time on this.

Sonja Drimmer@sonjadrimmer.bsky.social

I have no opinion on Riemann. But I cannot understand journalists and professors of anything but math hollering “whoa this is huge!” in response to an industry paper dump devised to advertise the value of their product. This is like when randoms lose their minds over AI “discovering” a Raphael.

Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

I asked ChatGPT to create a cover for a course catalogue of a "university for people who have given up thinking due to AI over-reliance". To be fair, this is a pretty good take -- and more subtle than I expected... #aislop #criticalthinking #deskillling #chatGPT #philsky

My piece "The Two Timelines" is in the most recent issue of the Notre Dame publication Virtues and Vocations. What does Star Trek have to say about our current moment with Large Language Models? socialconcerns.nd.edu/research/vir... @virtuevocations.bsky.social

Well, if you believe what the AI companies say, they really have no way of knowing what their agents are up to! So the only plausible consistent response they could have to plagiarism accusations is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

c0nc0rdance@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social

... but because Anthropic can't PROVE that the Copenhagen data wasn't added to the model's training set, their findings are now suspect (at least to me). The signatures for these viral sequences ("Jumbotrons" because they're in jumbo-virus infected bacteria) are discoverable /but cryptic/.

In case anyone thought the whole Susan Collins corruption thing is just a big misunderstanding

NEW: ProPublica revealed that the FBI was circling Sen. Collins over a defense contractor’s donations — until Trump gutted the unit in charge. Collins has since mustered a defense with a series of incorrect and misleading claims.

As someone who grew up in Maine, I'm honestly shocked - not that Collins would be corrupt, but that she'd be so *openly* corrupt in such an easily discoverable way

NEW: In late 2024, FBI investigators had enough evidence to launch a sweeping bribery probe that could ensnare top lawmakers, including Sen. Susan Collins. Then Trump was reelected and eviscerated the FBI and DOJ teams handling public corruption probes.
