Chekov was always my favorite. In my neighborhood growing up, we would act out Star Trek episodes. The other boys would fight over who got to be Kirk and Spock, but I always played Chekov. I realize in hindsight I probably had a crush on him. 🤷 His passing is the loss of a little of my childhood.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Thank goodness. Great for Brazil and the world. Also great because it will piss off Trump and Stephen Miller.

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Just passed one of those overpass protests with big signs that said “FOOD GAS VOTE EARLY.” And I’m not actually sure what their point was. They clearly want us to honk and flash their lights, but I didn’t know if I supported them or not. At any rate, I’m not voting early.

Disdain for government and the belief that all politics is bad are probably the biggest threat to democracy today. MAGA is fueled by the idea that since government can’t do good, we should just tear it down. Showing that govt is capable of making life better is a great antidote.

If Burnham is taking this approach, spending energy on small changes that can add up to improved quality of life, this is a very hopeful strategy. If it works in reducing anti-government sentiments, maybe US Democrats will emulate it.

As discussions of rape have permeated this election season, Trump has remained constant in his loyalties. He described Max Miller as a “good person”; he “felt badly” for the Cornell 7; he called the ad with Acton’s birth mother “very powerful.” He excuses it because he identifies with the accused.

Has this idiot ever been to Iowa? The Ragbrai is one of the country’s most iconic bike races. And Iowa had some of the country’s first and best rail-to-trail bike paths. When I lived in Des Moines, we’d start at a microbrewery ride 20 miles out and then back and get a beer. That was 1994.

Joe Mitchell: "Thank God you're building the ballroom. Thank God you're getting rid of those awful bike lanes. We don't ride bicycles in Iowa."

Someone I know who was in Bahrain this summer said they were shocked to see how badly damaged the US base there was and how surprised they are that it has gotten so little coverage in the US.

It will be like the Nile Hotel in Uganda, the fanciest hotel in the country that also doubled as the main torture chamber under Idi Amin. Reportedly Amin would take a break from gala events at the hotel to go down and personally torture political prisoners for fun. So, Trump is in good company!

I'm officially the only gay man in America who hated Oh Mary. I saw it on Broadway with a crowd of friends who all absolutely loved it. I just didn't feel like I was in on the joke. It was so mean-spirited that I couldn't laugh. But EVERYBODY else I've talked to loves it. So I'm clearly wrong.

The school had all of the protocols designed to protect against gunmen, but they failed. Locks don't work, active shooter drills don't work. So ... just spitballing here ... but maybe the answer is to finally restrict the easy availability of guns?

My university has long participated in a tuition exchange program with other universities to make college more affordable for faculty children. They announced yesterday that they are ending the program. The year my first kid starts college. So glad I've been such a dedicated employee. yea.

I just bookmarked this threat. Basic instructions on how to develop your own style. For a gay guy, I've never been particularly stylish ... but I feel like I should be.

I just got a lovely note from a former student with a long explanation of why they appreciated me, and it was so meaningful and really made my day. I wish that I were better at sending thank you notes, because they really make the world a brighter place.

They clearly hope that if they just pretend the economy is doing well long enough and hard enough, we’ll all ignore the fact that their tariffs and wars and cut backs and erratic policymaking have created widespread hardship. But the rich have gotten richer! Thats what matters most!

So imagine you're at the University of Michigan football game & you say, 'Hey everybody, let's go build a factory!'"

A great example of how authoritarianism works. People and organizations censor themselves just because they’re afraid of consequences. The regime doesn’t have to do anything to gain compliance. Powerful and respected groups comply in advance, effectively advancing the authoritarian agenda.

Attacking institutions upholding international law is probably not the way to prove you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. The MAGA cult is absolutely delusional in their misunderstanding of how the world actually works.

A student came up to me after class to say how fun my lectures are. “Last semester I skipped my classes all the time, but I never skip this class!” Okay, I should say, don’t skip ANY class, but hey, I’ll take what I can get!

I drove through NH on Friday and was struck by two things: 1. There were a lot more Pappas signs than Sununu, and more Ayotte signs than Warmington (consistent with polls); and 2. While all of the Democratic signs were blue, none of the GOP signs were red. The red brand is toxic at the moment.

This is disgusting. Even though Black home ownership is way lower than for whites, they think it’s too much. Even though Black college attendance is lower, they think it’s too much. These racist assholes would take us back to slavery if they could.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️

Trump on his meeting with Gold Star families: "I invited them out to check out the new helipad, check out the new ballroom, and check out the new helicopter"

I say this as someone from Middle America who had the good fortune to have a supportive family, but I have seen too many other queer folk whose families rejected them or whose communities drove them out.

You would think that Congress might at some point want to assert its authority as a separate branch of government that has authority, for example, over allocating money. But then you look at Mike Johnson and John Thune and realizing it won't happen until Congress changes.
