£10 spent on benefits isn't just £10 lost, it's £10 that will then be spent on food, or rent which keeps circulating in the economy. £10 given to big businesses in a tax cut just ends up in a profit margin, or a millionaire shareholders pocket. Its likely never spent again.

This would be economically illiterate & environmentally disastrous - and makes us less secure: undermining efforts to reduce energy bills by reducing dependence on gas, increasing vulnerability to global dictators, driving climate emissions & knee capping a market that’s just beginning to take off

I'm partial to a bit of badly painted philosophical graffiti. Some years ago, on Botchergate in Carlisle, in six feet high rollered letters, the phrase "BUY LESS, WORK LESS!" was painted along the hoardings for a redevelopment site (now an Ibis hotel, I think). I am reminded of this truism often.

I had a fess published a few years ago about how I couldn't connect with my lifelong pals cos all they wanted to do was booze and take coke. I told them how I felt, turned out they thought the same and now we climb Munro's on Sundays. Lads, talk to your pals.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

“Whatever the future of this dale, I hope it's created by the people of this place, not imposed on them. And I have a lot of faith in them to find their own way.” Yesterday I listened to the first episode of Another Country, the new James Rebanks doc Some thoughts 🧵 www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

bbc.co.ukAnother Country with James Rebanks - Muker - BBC SoundsJames Rebanks explores the lives of rural workers in and around three English villages.

When the chap who has come to clear the wasps' nest from your attic exclaims "wow, that's friggin' huge", you begin to wonder whether nuking it from orbit may be the only way... (We've tried to ignore this for two years, but they were finding their way into the youngest's (wasp phobic) room daily.)

will say it again: the most effective way to curb far right agitators like Lowe, "Tommo" et. al. would be to stop their ability to earn money for it from social media or live streaming. So much of it is grifting for revenue, not attention.

Here's Rupert Lowe MP's payments from X Corp over the past year. This man is making serious cash from Musk's platform. Payments surged over the summer, during UK 'unrest', and when Musk was frantically re-sharing Lowe's posts... Bleak, lucrative work if you can get it.

This is concerning. Some emergency services aren't able to locate OS grid references easily (and there aren't any obviously simple free apps to tell you this quickly without data even if they could). In rural areas w3w has unfortunately become the norm. Surely someone could design an alternative?

Its What3Words accounts filing day! They're doing so great. Nothing to worry about. I'm sure "the launch of our advertising revenue stream" will offset the "lost major Enterprise customer". Ads are really profitable now, right? find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/0843...

I missed at least one bus taking these, but the light was perfect, and it was right next to the stop. How could I not? (Emphasis on the "was", it's all been razed now, less than a month later.) Kodak gold 200 in the Rolleicord Va. #photography #filmphotography

Half of England's Grade 1 agricultural land is in the Fens, and almost all of it is already at or below sea level Our biggest breadbasket, home to 400,000 people, and it could be lost within decades Surely this deserves a bit more attention?

theconversation.comBritain’s most artificial landscape may not survive climate changeThe Fens are a food-growing powerhouse, but the landscape only exists thanks to humans holding back the sea.

Even if you can't afford to donate, you can send a message of thanks. Let volunteers, who spend time and effort to make the seas safer for all of us know that you appreciate what they do and stand with them against hate and persecution.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)

Weather Report: oppressive heat. A roiling of clouds, a promise or tease? In town, a smattering of fat drops. People stop: hands out, exclaiming, cheering, faces to the heavens & each other in what looks like a mass epiphany. In the fields the horses gallop & buck. Emotional Weather: expectant

As someone who brews their own (I'm cheap and I like to know what's in my beer), just knowing a little of what 'proper' brewers do is fascinating. It also reminds us that swerving the big names, and seeking out something local and different, can be an adventure when you're out and about.
