Guess I'll do an introduction too. Hi, I'm Tim and I write about video games! I was an editor for Destructoid, and nowadays you can catch my words on PC Gamer and Kotaku. If you enjoy celebrating the ways games make us laugh, cry, or just entertain us, you might like my work! Highlights are below.

Really vibing with this summary of DualShocker’s 10/10 review for Final Fantasy Resonance. Sometimes you play a jRPG so good you just sit there in the glow of your monitor and go “Hayes Madsen.” And really, what else do you even need to say.

I get why people keep saying “just make good stuff and you’ll rise above AI slop.” What stings is that so many people *have* put their hearts and souls into their work for years, but still struggle to be noticed. When you’ve already given everything for your art, “just be better” isn’t a solution.

Obviously it’s up to us to make the world we want to live in, rather than waiting for companies to “do the right thing.” I just think it’s just worth acknowledging how much people already give to their art, whether it’s games, videos, articles, etc. Passion alone only carries you so far.

We’ll find a way out, and we can’t give up. I don’t think anyone is doomed to inevitable failure. But also, things right now suck, and that’s not your fault. It’s okay to just acknowledge that. #blutoid

How many games worthy of Dressmaker’s success have come and gone without earning a blip of recognition? Not throwing shade, Dressmaker is very good. But it was easy to be buried before the modern slop era, now the climate’s even more oppressive. Even if you’re just making things for fun.

Prioritizing quality over output is the way forward, yes. People have to adapt to the post-AI world instead of waiting for it to go away, yes. But this stuff needs regulation. Store fronts and companies drowning in cash owe it to us to filter slop. And “we’re tweaking our algorithm” doesn’t cut it.

PSA about this, I just spent an afternoon with Costco canceling my orders online for a PSN card pack. Went in store and was fine, mine had plenty of PSN and only a couple eShop left (YMMV of course). Probably safe to assume Costco’s getting flooded with people wanting a discount on GTA6.

Wario64@wario64.bsky.social

Nintendo eShop/PSN gift card codes sale at Costco (20% off): buff.ly/UuP9DHL -$100/$200 eShop for $80/$160 -$100/$150 PSN for $80/$120 $400 eShop for $340 at Newegg buff.ly/f1ek1tt #ad eShop balance works on Nintendo Store (hardware, consoles, physical games, etc.)

Google’s AI summary thinks Gades saying “THIS is what I would call frue destruction!” is from Lufia II when it is in fact from Lufia: The Legend Returns for the Game Boy. So much knowledge at its disposal and it can’t even pretend to be a Lufia fan accurately, just absolutely pathetic. #blutoid

Sure let’s add another all-timer SNES RPG to 2027. Lufia 2’s still got some of the absolute best dungeon design to this day. #blutoid

Lufia I & II The Sinistrals Saga brings both Lufia & the Fortress of Doom and Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals to PS5, Switch 2, Switch, and PC Steam in 2027: https://www.rpgsite.net/news/21439-lufia-i-ii-the-sinistrals-saga-pc-ps5-switch-2-steam-release

As a thank you for the tariff refunds I have received*, I am offering your outlet a $10 discount on my review of Terranigma on Steam. Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. *The tariff refunds I have received do not exist. #blutoid

Pouring a cold one for the Final Fantasy-ified version of Touch It :(

We asked Square Enix the most important question about Final Fantasy Resonance: Will Ariana Grande return in the Final Fantasy Brave Exvius retelling? https://kotaku.com/final-fantasy-resonance-brave-exvius-ariana-grande-2000730334

Never thought I’d see a Battle of Olympus remake. Instantly had the music blast in my head like I was 5 again. I kind of love the 8-Bit to 16-Bit upgrade. Makes it really feel like it was pulled from an alternate reality where the game got the Super Mario All-Stars treatment in the 90s. #blutoid

A remake of the NES game Battle of Olympus is scheduled to hit early access next year. From the original devs, looks like they're updating the pixel art to 16-bit-ish. Hope for the best! store.steampowered.com/app/5013380/...

Obviously, it’s hard for a game like this to stand out today when we’re drowning in Metroidvanias and Zelda 2-likes. That said, I love that the original devs are attached to this and I wish them nothing but the best.

I really think Terranigma is the ultimate expression of what video games can be. Every facet of it, from mechanics to visuals, all build to a deeply symbolic and beautiful reflection of humanity that embraces joy and pain in equal measure. I will gladly take any excuse to play it again.

AI hallucination of the day: Typed the name of a bar with a basic name into Google, AI summary says "there is no bar called [name] in [town]" despite the page for said bar appearing *right alongside it*. It could've just spat the dictionary definition of the name, but it worked so hard to be wrong!

Seeing the responses to this drives home how rural the rural small town I grew up in was. Weekends were, at best, jumping off cliffs into water and rolling down sandpits if you didn’t want to sneak mom’s vodka underneath the bridge. Admittedly, still a step up from doomscrolling in your room.

I'm gonna turn to dust.

Honestly, I'm more surprised that Langrisser Mobile did well enough to survive for seven years and get a sequel game when Square can't even keep an FF7 gacha alive for three. I'm also kinda tickled that this somehow looks less fanservice-y than Langrisser Mobile, even with the jiggling on display.

Kotaku@kotaku.com

The new Langrisser tactics RPG looks like gacha slop ripping off Unicorn Overlord https://kotaku.com/new-langrisser-tactics-rpg-looks-like-gacha-slop-thats-ripping-off-unicorn-overlord-2000718474

I actually thought Langrisser Mobile was solid when I played it. Can't speak for it now, because FOMO and daily grinds inevitably burns me out of every gacha. But even if this is a Unicorn Overlord ripoff, those memories were pleasant enough that I'll likely dip into this (and burn out fast again).

It is kinda amazing how people writing about video games will spend every waking hour on the job for peanuts in return and somehow there just isn’t any money in the budget for them.

I can’t wait for Microsoft to enter its 3DO era. #blutoid

StrikerObi@strikerobi.bsky.social

Oh yeah this rings very true. It's basically Microsoft's laptop strategy, but now for game systems. You can buy a Surface laptop made by MS, or any number of alternative Windows laptops made by third parties like Dell, Lenovo, etc.

Just catching up on announcements now, but Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is SUCH a good choice for the next gacha-to-console conversion. It was already a classic Final Fantasy in spirit, and now the story gets to be properly immortalized in the FF canon. Really high hopes for this.

Gonna pop my head up to let you all know I have a review of Mina The Hollower coming soon. Life hasn't exactly gotten easier, so I wasn't able to finish in time for the embargo. But rest assured that Mr. "Link's Awakening is the best Zelda" has some thoughts about this. #blutoid

Less than 24 hours ago I was saying to family "We're getting a new Star Fox soon, I can feel it in my bones" to which my brother responded "I don't know if Nintendo can do anything other than Star Fox 64" so today's reveal is extremely funny to me. #blutoid

Sure, I never played Final Fantasy XI, but check out this list of things I’ve learned about it just from its collaborations with other Final Fantasy games. 1: Shantotto is small and has a funny laugh

Had a dungeon run with an ace of a new healer in FFXIV. I popped Living Dead on a big pull, they let me die so I could full heal, and after they complimented me on the strategy. Couldn’t say thank you without a keyboard, but made me think about how you can make someone’s night with a few nice words.

If anyone is questioning Andrea’s credentials to talk about this video game, I can say from experience as a “since ARR player” that none of you want to go toe-to-toe with her over how much time you’ve invested into this MMO.

Andrea Shearon@majora.bsky.social

Just in case anyone gets it twisted, I’ve been writing about games in some capacity on and off for over a decade now. I’ve also played FFXIV since beta, and raided almost every tier since launch (on content!)Though did have a few I had to peace out in before clearing thanks to life.

Okay so the Evolved mode details do have me properly hyped, genuinely looking forward to Evercold now.

$.02: I've amassed a lot of FFXIV fatigue, so was ready to hate on the expansion reveal. Minus Evangelion I didn't really get hyped about anything, but the huge focus on fundamental changes has me cautiously optimistic. Everything shown was an improvement, and they're saying the right stuff so far.

And yeah this is a big thing. With Shadowbringers added, the trial has caught up with where everyone I know IRL has dropped off. I’d love to see some old friends back in the game and this would almost certainly do it.

Obviously a ton of stuff is yet to be revealed. I know there was a comment about getting patches out sooner, I'm still of the mind that content can take as long as it needs to get fully cooked. I certainly don't look at FFXIV as a game that doesn't have enough to do or anything.

Anyway this comes from a place of love. Even when I'm not subbed, I carry an enormous amount of respect for Creative Studio III. I can't think of another live service thing I've cared about for as long as this, and somehow I've never felt outright sick of it since ARR, so that's an accomplishment.

I do think Dawntrail revealed for me just how drab the MSQ experience is when it's not bolstered by top-class writing. I'd love FFXIV expansions to feel like real adventures and not just busywork until you get cool cutscenes and bosses. I'd absolutely love more instances like In From The Cold.
