Today I put in a long day at the baseball stats factory, writing an article that included the initialism "BLTR". Cracked open my mailbox, saw the paper of record had come, and was scandalized to find the following

In fairness when I was graduating from HS and a recruiter asked me if I had a better plan than the military I said I was attending MIT and he said “yeah that’s a better plan” and that was that

Hegseth to US military: if you get into MIT, we won't let you attend because of the risk that you will be exposed to ideas hostile to MAGA when you study there.

It always feels like all the wrong people die, but I think it’s because there are far more beloved people than there are bastards.

Realizing that Heated Rivalry has wrought upon my brain the Game of Thrones problem: The name of an individual volume is now more well known than the book series title and my brain will be forever rebelling against using the individual title for the series even if it makes communication clearer.

If you’re here because you saw the repeat on TV today, here is the update on me: my hands are quite good now (feet are not there but better too), and the problem now is heat not cold, but overall recovery is very good. Just had my one year post treatment follow up and my scans and blood are clean.

This video from Senator Padilla's staff, shared to Twitter by Fox LA's Elex Michaelson, shows Padilla forced to the ground by men wearing FBI uniforms who then handcuff him behind his back. This is after he is forcibly removed from the Noem press conference for asking a question.

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

"We'll just terraform Mars," they insist, unable to terraform Earth, a planet that is already perfect except it's like 2° too warm.

The mystery of why California HSR costs so much and is taking so long is not really a mystery 1) The easiest parts to build aren't at the largest population centers at the ends 2) It needs a lot of land which is expensive 3) It crosses mountains and seismic areas 4) It's never been funded enough

Some positive personal recoveries: I made it from LA to Boston and back without physical difficulties. The cold in Boston didn't provoke neural pain. I've put on shirts with buttons the last three days and had no trouble with my fingers beyond how annoying cuff buttons are generally.

Dear future self: When your parents offer you the humidifier when you visit, just take it. Don’t wait and see if you “really” need it. Just take it. PS: Take yours with you to Phoenix and Vegas, too.

This has actually been noticeable in my real life in California. We’ve still got grid problems with respect to wildfire, but the handling of high demand is much better and more seamless to the public than when I moved here a decade ago.

We've reached a real inflection point with grid battery storage. Given its recent stupendous growth—it was virtually nonexistent in 2020—it's easy to see it filling out the rest of that duck curve before the end of the decade

If you think that being a supervisor guiding entry level employees through a job, giving them feedback while learning about their strengths and goals and how to place them in a team in a way that lets them shine is as “soul sucking” as revising generated prompts, you’re a stupid person, I’m sorry.

As my pill tracker tips from week 17 to 18, I realize that with 23 weeks of drugs my chemo is the length of the NFL season and postseason. And we’re about to make the playoffs. (I guess the surgery was the preseason? Or maybe the medical oncology appointments.)
