Finally made a video for my app, Learn To Play It, for the socials. I guess that's how it's done these days. Whatever happened to posting to comp.sys.mac.announce and leaving it at that? Try it out: learntoplayit.com Leave a star: github.com/tobycmurray/...

Musicians fear AI will replace them. But it can empower them instead. This app uses AI source separation and beat detection so you can isolate any instrument, slow it down & loop tricky parts that stay in time---speeding up as you Learn To Play It. Free, open source, fully local. learntoplayit.com

In 2024, when Australia started talking age assurance, I argued device and operating system companies like Apple, Google and MS, should provide the foundation, to create an interoperable ecosystem for online child safety. Very glad to see that’s now happening theconversation.com/apples-new-a...

theconversation.comApple’s new age verification is a game-changer for kids’ safety online. We need the rest of big tech to followAs Pornhub embraces Apple’s new age verification in Australia, this could be the start of a broader shift in the tech industry.

Were I one Australia's most beloved bands, announcing their long-awaited reunion, in a climate in which my lead singer and his peers recently railed against generative AI, I'd avoid releasing a statement that reads like generative AI copy. #Powderfinger

But you don’t hire talented juniors *for the routine tasks they do*. You hire them because you want to develop them into talented seniors. When a firm says "AI can do the research and make the slide decks, so we don’t need juniors" either they don’t realise this, or... (2/3)

Counterexample to the Jacobian Conjecture AF Ramos et al The conjecture asks whether a polynomial self-map of affine space has a polynomial inverse whenever its Jacobian determinant is a nonzero constant. This entry gives an Isabelle/HOL verification of the 3-d map announced by Levent Alpöge.

Anyone asking themselves "if AI can disprove the Jacobian conjecture, what's left for me to do?" ask yourself instead: "Which of yesterday's insurmountable problems might we solve today, with such tools at our command?" The superintelligence is *you* augmented with AI.

When I said “the superintelligence is you augmented with AI,” I didn’t just mean AI making discoveries. I meant that every discovery made with AI changes the discoverer. Humankind becomes better equipped to make the next discovery, aided by AI. It’s possible this forms a virtuous cycle.

Just wasted 3 days chasing a mirage in which I tried to resurrect work I'd abandoned 6 months ago, because Claude convinced me that my memory was wrong and that its was right, only to discover that the results were in fact just as I'd remembered. What a productivity miracle is AI! #ClaudeConned

THREAD: 1. Some years ago women academics contacted me unsolicited on Twitter (which I no longer use) about an academic in Melbourne. They’d made complaints to a faculty head about the man’s targeted, obsessive bullying of women colleagues, including First Nations women. The university kept him on.

I've very fond memories of this game. But had you asked me to recall the graphics yesterday, I wouldn't have remembered it being this pixelated. Memory seems akin to a generative AI model. Hence the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia, as well as memory's fallibility. The past as mere hallucination.

Matt call this an investigation of a $10 question. That undersells the importance of this encryption to frontier labs. It’s one of their primary defences against model distillation attacks, which represent major threats to their competitiveness.

Last week I discovered that ChatGPT and Claude will send you their “encrypted raw reasoning” and of course I immediately wasted a weekend trying to do something bad with it. What I got for my trouble was this blog post: blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2026/05/29/f...

People are falling in love with LLMs. They’re seeing their marriages and sanity splintered by these things. LLMs are accelerating the pace of science. They’re being used to help wage war, and surveil people’s thoughts for fuck’s sake. What about this is not sci fi?

As a science fiction writer I really fucking resent tech bros for ruining the phrase "artificial intelligence." 80 years of it being all about cool androids and interesting computers destroyed by five years of "Spicy autocorrect making everything shittier for money." NEVER FORGIVE.

To a layman’s definition of intelligence, the claim of frontier models being “PhD-level” has moved quickly from being farcical to arguable. We need to have our eyes open to the implications, not least for our PhD students and the future of research theconversation.com/a-phd-is-an-...

theconversation.comA PhD is an apprenticeship in research – we can’t let AI take that awayAI might have ‘PhD-level’ intelligence. But substituting it for a PhD student sacrifices a special part of the academic ecosystem.
