As I've mentioned, it's been really strange the last years to realize that I might not be able to visit the UK again, perhaps ever. At one point, I loved it so much - London, Cornwall, so many places, ideas, experiences, contexts, mythoi, people and institutions. I was applying for jobs there once.

The community @ucl-arc.bsky.social worked hard to build a consensus on our policy for AI-assisted RSE @society-rse.org . We’re publishing it to help others learn from our efforts: doi.org/10.5522/04/3... Feedback most welcome.

doi.orgAI-Assisted Software Development Policy for UCL Advanced Research ComputingThis policy covers the use of large language models (LLMs) by ARC staff for software, systems and platform engineering, data analytics and computational statistics, modelling and simulation, and process automation — briefly "AI for programming". It covers model and tool selection, collaborative behaviour in teams, collaborator/customer interactions, future research directions, and education and training content for teaching software and systems engineering.A comprehensive review of AI-assisted software development, from tab-completion to multi-agent harnesses such as Codex and Claude Code, is beyond the scope of this policy. This policy does not directly address the broader questions surrounding LLMs: the provenance and copyright status, environmental impact, long-term labour market impact, and social and cultural implications, among others. Those are legitimate and live debates, and colleagues who have concerns should raise them within the appropriate ARC fora, their team and with line managers. We encourage open discussion of these issues in a spirit of disagreeing well.Creating a consensus policy is hard. This document is the result of extensive discussions within UCL's Advanced Research Computing Centre, and endeavours to set out principles and an overall position within which people holding diverse views on the topic can work. The authors acknowledge and are grateful for rich discussions and contributions from many people beyond those listed.

I will be so sorry to see @drkariljordan.carpentries.org @erinstellabecker.bsky.social and the other members of the team go. I can't express how grateful I am for everything they have done for the @carpentries.carpentries.org community and for me personally.

Today we share a follow-up to yesterday's announcement of an executive leadership transition at The Carpentries. We are also sharing further changes across the Core Team and our programmatic activities as part of a broader restructuring of The Carpentries. Details: carpentries.org/blog/2026/08...

This was a difficult blog post to write, but an important one. With the impending reduction in Core Team capacity, we had to make tough decisions about what work we put down. [1/4]

For the Curriculum Team, that meant retiring some curricula & pausing my beloved Collaborative Lesson Development Training program. It also forced me to finally admit defeat and close down peer review in The Carpentries Lab – something that TBH I've not had capacity to coordinate in some time. [2/4]

Partially dislocated my shoulder near the end of my vacation last week, triggering an impromptu reprioritisation of my work. I don't expect to get a lot done while my right arm is in a sling, but I am enjoying the opportunity to learn my way around the voice control features of my laptop.

This, so much. As long as 'number of papers published' is the single metric by which careers stand and fall, people will game the system. Nobody in power wants to change the system, instead it's piecemeal 'solution' after 'solution' ('AI to find cheaters!') instead of thinking about the incentive.

We had a great invited presentation from Elle O'Brien and a huge turnout. Reflections: good assessment is now v difficult; folks are keen to discuss whether/how best practices can be promoted among scientists who use genAI; and nobody seems sure what programming 101 for novices should look like now.

Heavily inspired by LLVM's policy, we hope that it will empower our Maintainers to respond to genAI contributions with confidence, and sustain transparency and continuous learning in the community.

3. We hosted our first pair of GenAI + Teaching community discussions, bringing educators together to discuss challenges and opportunities they have encountered relating to genAI use in their teaching.

We developed it in response to the reports we receive with increasing frequency from Instructors who have observed more and more learners making regular use of chatbots during a workshop. Read the blog post to learn more.

This bonus module aims to empower our Instructor community to adapt and respond to growing genAI use among learners at their workshops. It will be delivered by expert Trainers in standalone, six-hour events.
