According to the World Health Organization, climate change is one of the top 10 health threats facing humanity. No aspect of adolescent health is spared from the consequences of climate change: food and housing insecurity, heat-related morbidity and mortality, water-borne diseases, infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted infections and HIV, mental health disorders, gender-based violence, conflict, internal displacement, and migration are all impacted.

Intersections of larger structural contexts that pose differential access to Black adolescents' health resources, such as state-level racism and neighborhood-level disadvantage, may govern these risks. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the associations between state-level racism, neighborhood disadvantage, and their intersection with nutrition and obesity for Black adolescents in a longitudinal study.

jahonline.orgThe Rise in Adolescent Social and Health Inequalities Amidst the COVID-19 PandemicThe COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on poor urban communities, with limited access to resources, lack of disposable income to sustain lockdowns, and inadequate housing to separate the sick from the healthy. While there is growing concern about escalating social disparities in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is lack of data on how urban adolescents in marginalized communities experienced the pandemic. Additionally, there is little cross-cultural exploration of how disruptions to education, social isolation, and increased economic shocks in households challenged adolescents' health and well-being compared to prepandemic conditions.

Studies are typically cross-sectional and categorize cisgender lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) and transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth as a combined group (i.e., LGBTQ+). There is a need for longitudinal studies that examine differences between LGB and TGD youth for a better understanding of their mental health needs.

[1] LGBTQ + youth's mental health problems are primarily attributable to discrimination and victimization exposure. [2] Despite these adversities, several longitudinal studies - including Real and Russell's [3] recent study with a large and racially/ethnically diverse sample - find that LGBTQ + youth's mental health generally improves from adolescence to young adulthood, especially when they have protective factors like family support.
