It's cold and snowy back in the hills lately. Just north of Sid's Fork, the townspeople say a strange howling wind comes rattling down off the ridge sometimes. Probably nothing right?

sometimes i see those youtubers like "i live in China's ghost city" and i'm like... dude if they would let me be really, really trans and internet-loud i would love that. maintained infrastructure with like 10 people in it sounds ideal to me. quiet hours at the super market all the time, sign me up.

other than taking walks and running errands i'm mostly a shut-in and have been for a long time. last Summer i went to the lake 3 times, was harassed twice of them, and never returned. drunk guys. i just wanted to swim. with the right people around, anywhere can become a corner.

the reality that any woman will tell you, trans or not, is that all of the advice is bullshit. you can hide as much as possible, wear the baggiest clothes and the plainest colors, wear your hair up, travel in a group, "act normal" - it doesn't matter what you do because *you* are not the problem.

right now someone is trying to buy an unused, cheap commercial building near my town to build a mosque, and the racist spew from some of the people here is exactly like it was when i was in middle school in 2001. nothing will change for them. cable TV shines out of their eyes.

back on the ghost city - if housing for my family only cost $100 then i could completely forget about looking for a normal (usually evil somehow, soul-sucking, illegitimate) software job and just do stuff i consider high value work and be ok. so much more time would be free for open source too.

don't get me wrong, i love people, it's just that the US has been particularly loud in awful ways as long as i can remember. i'm appalachian to the core but sometimes i see a little too much of my neighbors on facebook and think "maybe i should leave before they start shooting each other"

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

if you, like me, care about gamefeel a lot, and you end up with a game where the player controller is like 5000+ lines and you hate working on it, just remember that it's the most important 5000 lines in the game, and it will be ok. hopefully. "e.e

this state is set and resets this timer, but then somewhere else i don't reset the timer, and was that _intentional_ which isn't reflected in a comment or easy to tell in a play test, or did i just _forget_ to reset the timer there? shit.

multiply this by 100 things and then try to imagine the amount of "record a replay doing a specific maneuver, make a change, recompile, play it back, make sure it matches" i'm now having to do. imagine if i _didn't_ have replays! good grief.

also, having done the "inline everything unless there are actually 3+ callsites" policy in this codebase, boy it hasn't been fun when trying to now go back and tidy this player controller. even with named commented sections, it has been annoying.

i don't wanna start anything, but it's weird for me how much merch around TADC treats jax's torment scene as lighthearted or zany. maybe that's my personal damage talking, but it's about the last thing i'd choose to immortalize in an art book page or vinyl figure

like, imagine selling a funko pop of Call from Alien: Resurrection having her bullet wound "explored" by the Newborn or something. nobody would think that was a good idea right? like yeah, here's a complex and emotionally difficult metaphor we really wanna make a *toy* of

a lot of my favorite indie games to play and remember aren't the ones that were super-hits and made a drillion dollars. they're weird, they're experimental, they have some rough edges. maybe i put too much pressure on Wizwag to be a Professional Game For Steam Monies

"i _have_ to have 6-8 dungeons that are really hard for me to design in a way that the youtube pontificatori won't talk shit about and i _have_ to have more items than this even if i have no design reason to add more and i _have_ to make a toby fox level story or i'm screwed"

meanwhile it's like... my combat was really fun ~4 years ago and my cutscene system was cool ~8 years ago and holy shit girl just finish A VERSION of the game, you could have already done so much if you didn't doubt yourself so much at every turn

even some games that are super duper derivative, like "tracing official artwork of a nintendo franchise" level of derivative, do something interesting or fun that you can learn from, particularly if the imitation is done in earnest rather than cynically ripping something off.

some of my larger projects, Wizwag top of the list, get hamstrung because i get into this funk of "ok i've made the part that i'm good at really good, but now i """have to""" add this and this and this to make it a """real""" game because i """have to""" make it big enough to put at $14.99 on steam-

maybe it would be more true to myself to let it be weird and imperfect, and not try to hold it to an "indies with millions of dollars" standard of polish when the parts closest to me are how movement feels, "i can't believe they thought of that" and the atmosphere of places

i learn a lot from games that people could be really mean about on a storefront. some ancient Flash game or linux GPL game from the 90s will do something creative and interesting, but you only get to experience that if you can meet the game where it is and actually engage with it as art

What I think is important is to continue caring about the things you love despite anything. The storm will pass. The chaff will be blown away. Good work will continue standing.

got an email from Romance of Men about some new swords they were adding to their catalogue, and in the middle of the email there's this butt-ugly AI video thumbnail from their official channel. =[

this thumbnail looked liked something shadiversity would like. i'm not gonna post it but it was maximum cringe. i guess they know who most sword guys are in their customer base, but christ.

we don’t use generative AI, have hand drawn 2D animated sprites, AND our game is coded by a bearded canadian guy with glasses so you be the judge of that

looking forward to the gameboy color made of real war dog leather next. i'm so tired, man. yeah i saw DOOM as well, and Duke Nukem, and the rest. stfu. just stfu. why are we beset on all sides by dudes who belong in the back room of a 90s video store, where they can't bother the customers?
