So applicable to Portland & the #Blazers now, to the Gov., #ORDem leadership, Hizzoner, JVP, and the biz community. It exposes the scam being perpetrated on all of us by the new Blazer owners & league. Best: It’s a great, fun read for any sports fan.

J.C. Bradbury@jcbradbury.com

I wrote my book because there needs to be some awareness of how bad our public policy is toward sports venues. Everyday there's another subsidy proposed, and everyone acts like it's a reasonable policy choice. Why not just hand out cigarettes to teenagers?

A reason we get stadium boondoggles is that the folks in charge of budgeting don't understand BASIC public finance. IT'S NOT POSSIBLE TO COSTLESSLY EXTRACT $1 BILLION FROM THE ECONOMY. No stadium has EVER generated enough new tax revenue to pay for itself, but he projects it will.

Field of Schemes@fieldofschemes.bsky.social

West Sacramento's city manager insists using a mega-TIF district to siphon off $1B in taxes for an MLB expansion team wouldn't cost taxpayers anything because it's only money "generated by the stadium," not the Casino Night Fallacy again.

Notwithstanding the blowout 1st game last nite: It’s hard to find a better summary of the #Blazers refusal to move forward, or a depiction of Hizzoner’s deplorable biz instincts. #Portland #Dundon

J.C. Bradbury@jcbradbury.com

Portland's mayor has to be the world's worst negotiator. There's a ridiculously generous deal on the table that the owner won't take. It's simple: the Blazers can take it or leave it. Or perhaps he likes the proximity to sports that negotiations bring. What a huge waste of public resources.

trappercreek.bsky.social reposted

Which is exactly why Portland leaders should not waive the clause. It came with the team he bought, so if Dundon doesn't like it, that's 100% on him. Given his behavior and the heat local reps are taking the deal isn't getting any sweeter. And he's got nowhere else better to go.

The Oregonian@oregonian.com

Negotiations between Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon and Portland officials have stalled over a $1 billion settlement demand tied to the team's first-class arena maintenance clause, with Dundon pushing for a 10-year buyout option rather than the required 20-year lease commitment. https://mrf.lu/2bWJc

He fails to mention the qui tam filing process under the federal False Claims Act covers essentially the same examples & provides the filer(s) significantly more than 1% of the recovery. More smoke & mirrors from Trump.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump announces "fraud whistleblower incentive program" -- "Americans will now be able to go to fraud dot gov and report cases of corruption and theft of taxpayer dollars in their communities ... if you turn somebody in and you find $1 billion, we're giving a commission of 1%. That's a lot of money"

I find JC Bradbury’s analysis so refreshing & rational. I wish his book “This One Will Be Different” had been published in advance of Dundon et al’s purchase of the team. Perhaps the State’s political leadership would have been more cautious & assert counters from more of a position of strength.

J.C. Bradbury@jcbradbury.com

The only reason relocation "hangs" over the Blazers negotiations in Portland is because the media keep bringing it up. There are no superior available markets/offers, and there's not even a hard deadline to complete a deal.

This guy’s trying to invoke PTSD reactions from people who’ve long forgotten Grover Norquist & the wrecking ball he tried to unleash on America. Yikes!

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

Bluesky today reminding me that there are a lot of homeowners out there who consider themselves diehard progressives but will turn into Grover Norquist the second you suggest that taxing the wealth held in their homes is fine and good.

This certainly seems true for @trimet.org @trimet.bsky.social and the Old Portland voices that keep sparking fear & demanding more transit cops & security.

Jarrett Walker@humantransit.bsky.social

Key pt for those who want to cut transit funding because agencies are "inefficient." A big growth in transit costs since 2020 has been security, partly due to pressure from some of the same people who now want that to be evidence of inefficiency. By @idothethinking.bsky.social. Link in 1st reply.

We could sure benefit from a lot more strong people like her in DC.

Ilhan Omar@ilhanmn.bsky.social

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

An interesting data set to play with & check out how TriMet stacks up.

While we're discussing how much influence academic economics research has on policy, 100+ studies have found sports venues are bad public investments. These findings aren't just ignored by policymakers, they are openly rebuffed with great hostility.

Our comprehensive survey of research on the economic impact of teams and stadiums in Journal of Economic Surveys. Long story short: teams and stadiums are not drivers of economic development. @dcoatesecon.bsky.social and @bradhumphreys.bsky.social onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Spectacular. And I thought our Piliated Woodpeckers here were magnificent.

Greater Flame backs Male red head, female black head foraging together in pairs or small family units throughout the year. Mate for LIFE Male and female share 14 days of incubation, feed chicks 26 days in the nest, and 3 more weeks after fledging, stay as a family unit until next breeding season

Can we have some of this in Portland? Please. Hizzoner’s divisiveness & lack of bringing people together, creating community or finding common things to celebrate as families & neighbors is getting really, really old.

NYC is opening 160 car-free (but treat-filled) streets and plazas to enjoy fun and safe fall festivities this spooky season. Find one near you at nyc.gov/trickorstreets.

I can’t recommend highly enough JC Bradbury’s new book “This One Will Be Different” a story & study of the economics of publicly funded sports arenas in the US. It’s a wonderful read. It will, however, cause you to lose respect for the elected officials who so readily drank Dundon’s Koolaid.

J.C. Bradbury@jcbradbury.com

Exactly. Dundon is just an asshole. It's time for Portland and Oregon leaders to stand up to this jerk. This treatment isn't worth an NBA team. You're better than this.

A great expose’ on how #Oregon DEQ fails to adequately monitor & enforce one of its basic regulatory functions & has even allowed WM to conduct its own regulatory compliance reviews. Shameful.

Bloomberg News@bloomberg.com

Hot waste piles can become environmental disasters. A Bloomberg Businessweek analysis finds that many landfill operators and regulators aren’t intervening at the level experts say is needed.

Hmm, #Portland. Sound familiar? #Blazers

J.C. Bradbury@jcbradbury.com

Back-to-back World Cup games held at 40 and 50-year-old stadiums, one of which was privately built. Remember that the next time a politician tells you they need a new taxpayer-funded stadium to attract world-class mega-events. It's bullshit.

This tops all of the preceding cheapskate, lowlife antics by Dundon et al. Can we in Portland please be done with this guy? #Blazers #Portland

Hey #Portland & #ORDems take note. Dundon et al are pitching the exact same deal & you’re buying it. Learn from others’ mistakes please.

Jim Owczarski@jimowczarski.bsky.social

Spent last couple days reading/listening up on how the Bears absolutely f—-d up their own stadium deal. A self-inflicted, unmitigated disaster on a level I’ve never seen in pro sports.
