New feature up on the Changelog! We pick apart the AI apocalypse, look at the weird cult all the fearmongering is coming from, and discuss the real reason apocalypse talk is useful to tech elites. systemist.net/changelog/le... #ai #apocalypse #cults

“We” did not lose a war with “Iran.” The U.S. govt, seeking to become a regime, lost a war with the Iranian regime. Both have long histories of murderousness toward the people in their immediate control. Both are fossil fuel pyramid schemes, exchanging all of our futures for short-term vanities.

I don’t think Platner is bringing out the worst of the left; I think he’s sliding some careless leftists rightward. This was always the risk with him. And any candidate for whom one excuses bigotry of any sort. It’s always a rightward slide.

The founder we should talk more about is Thomas Paine, who will fuck your shit up every time. Here he is in The Rights of Man just ripping into any ideas of "originalism" and that kind of garbage.

There's a Farsi saying, "del be del rah dareh", which roughly means, "there's a path between our hearts". It's the kind of thing you say when somebody you're thinking about calls you in that moment out of the blue. But I also think paths like that are built by people like her. She will be missed.

Very saddened to hear of the passing of Marjane Satrapi, responsible for one of my 10 favorite political quotes of all time. We need more voices like hers. Kill the patriot in yourself. It will only be used to hurt people. We are one human race.

Trump undoing refrigerant climate rules over the objections not just of environmentalists but of industry—even capitalism says “too much”!—& not for the sake of consumers, who will pay more, is what I call “extinctionism.” Wrecking the world just to wreck it, not even for a buck.

According to ProPublica, Jeff Bezos pays a real tax rate of 1.1% percent. So he's right; we should be taxing him at about 80-90x the rate he is currently being taxed. Doing this would indeed help that teacher in Queens.

A) everybody should read Robin Wall Kimmerer (this is from Braiding Sweetgrass). B) this sums up my #1 complaint with the entire survival game genre -- every game in it I've seen *completely uncritically* assumes this commodified view of the land and its inhabitants.

This gets more to the point about what AI is, though -- it's not "deciding to blackmail an exec," it's parsing through a corpus wherein fictional AIs would do something like that. AI might be possible, but LLMs are not that, or even an "early version". www.businessinsider.com/anthropic-cl...

my big take about the last week of discourse is I've found just about everyone annoying, including myself. This isn't good for us as individuals and it isn't good for any hope building a popular front. Whatever the solution winds up being, micro-blogging won't save us.

and perhaps even more importantly, are incapable of creating a *new* style; simply because at their cores LLMs are synthesis search systems that are *at best* capable of matching existing text in the corpus. by definition derivative, which can still be useful, but not for making art.

The models people have created simply cannot approach let alone convincingly mimic the ability of a strong stylist. Hemingway, Woolf, Joyce, Dillard, Wolfe, McCarthy, I could do this all day. Hell, I doubt AI could even do an unfunny Wodehouse.
