Come for the welfare check, stay for the welfare checks.

NBC News@nbcnews.com

A Florida man was found dead in his home during a welfare check in July 2022. Weeks later, one of the officers who discovered his body moved into the home and spent years impersonating him, according to investigators.

For non-Portlanders, the bridge that the plane flies under is the Hawthorne bridge, which is a favorite of bicyclists because there is very little vertical gain from the approaches on either side. Which means there is also very little clearance to fly under. So, yeah, do not do this.

i have lived here my whole life, and i have never once seen a plane take off from the Willamette… …let alone do THIS. wtf.

(the birth of emancipation was Benjamin Franklin Butler, a man who bought his generalship so he could have his army buy its uniforms from his textile mills at a price he set, finding himself in charge of some runaway slaves and saying "i have never given any man a refund and I'm not starting today")

Yay, we're doing quizzes. Welcome to LiveJournal! I think the little Midwestern I have in my PNW English comes from my mom via my grandpa. But there are quirks in my idiolect that the quiz doesn't catch, like the middle syllable in "tomato" rhymes with hat, and "cómoda" instead of dresser.

I got the shot. I've been scheming and hoping the conditions would work out for this for two weeks!! 🪶

When y'all see the shot I think I just got, you'd best believe it's not AI

This is some of the best historical fantasy out there. (It's a secondary world Rome with magic, but the setting hews a lot closer to our own world than most "secondary world version of country X" fantasy.) And $2.97 for a whole-ass trilogy is a crazy good deal.

Cass Morris@cassmorriswrites.com

Heyyyyyyy in honor of WorldCon, I've put the Aven Cycle on sale in both ebook and print! linktr.ee/cassrmorris

There are 6 ways to place 1 | and 1 – stripe on L4 through cell centers. For Z4, there are 3. Can these pieces tile a 6×6 square with continuous stripes? We're lucky: the total stripe length is a multiple of 6, & the number of crossings works. One unique tiling exists, up to symmetry. #TilingTuesday

The thing about trying to play the nativism card against Trump is that Trump is kicking out brown people, and you're just trying to kick out some beef. There are a lot more bigot voters than there are specifically rancher bigot voters, so I don't see how you can win here.

Senator Tammy Baldwin@baldwin.senate.gov

Americans don’t want foreign beef flooding our markets. Our dairy and beef industries are already suffering because of the president’s trade wars, and instead of lifting Wisconsin farmers up, he’s selling them out with this careless move. This is NOT America first.

We're having the flooring replaced in the house because my mom is planning on selling it. She reminded me that I picked this linoleum pattern in the laundry room when I was 7. Even then, I liked geometric tilings. #TilingTuesday

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

There are 12 3·½ ◣, (tri-half-weight-tans) if we allow partial half-tan overlaps. They tile a full-weight 3×3 square as shown. Two pairs of pieces have the same shape. A problem where they aren't interchangeable: find another tiling that maximizes the symmetry of the tan diagonals. #TilingTuesday

It can be a little hard to see what's going on here. The half-weight-tans are outlined with thick lines. There are overlapping half-weight-tans with different orientations, so it looks like there are smaller tans, but they aren't real. Here are the pieces individually, if that helps:

Today is Venn Day, in celebration of the mathematician John Venn, born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn Diagram.

Resolving ambiguity in order of operations is easy: simply enumerate all possible parsings of a given expression, compute each value, and then average. E.g., for 9-3-3÷3, ((9−3)−3)÷3 = 1 (9−(3−3))÷3 = 3 (9−3)−(3÷3) = 5 9−(3−(3÷3)) = 7 9−((3−3)÷3) = 9 so 9-3-3÷3 = (1+3+5+7+9)/5 = 5. Voilà! 🧮

In short, there are valuable lessons we can learn about drones & interceptors & magazine depth & mine-sweepers, etc. But the key lesson is: no amount of tactical excellence can salvage strategic incompetence. Who lost the Iran War? The American voter did, that damn fool. And he ought to feel it.

Portland: everyone who is seriously thinking of using our CLEAN ENERGY FUND to bribe our basketball team to not leave town needs to know that our transit agency is on track to cut nearly 1/3 of its service from what it was in 2025. Which is the greater crisis?

Performing in two morris dance sets and two madrigal singing sets in a period of four hours yesterday at the Sherwood, OR Robin Hood Festival was almost too much. (All sets were a half hour long.)

Oh, and earlier in the day I was a fractional Grand Marshal at the Robin Hood Festival Parade. (The Sherwood Renaissance Singers were collectively the Grand Marshals.) It's fun waving to people who are enthusiastic because you're at the front of the parade and they aren't bored yet!

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

At some point when I was a kid I read that the pupil was a hole in your eye for light. But I interpreted "hole" wrong, and tried to use a pin to see how deep it went. Fortunately, my eyelids were smarter than I was that time.

Similarly, when I was small I thought if there wasn’t a fire and you pulled the fire alarm at school then it would cause a fire. This was reinforced by the fire truck actually showing up one day when a boy pulled the alarm. Why would firemen be there if there wasn’t a fire?

At 15, Lois McMaster Bujold, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Seanan McGuire are definitely on the list. And then there are a lot of authors I'm fuzzy about. I've read a ton of Pratchett, but I don't know exactly which Discworld books. Possibly Asimov and Niven. I think Kate Elliott squeaks in, just.

Just finished watching 1776 (the musical) with my mom. It was one of my dad's favorite movies, but I don't know if I ever watched straight through the whole thing while he was alive. He'd put it on, and I'd get bored and leave and come back later. I'd always be able to see it with him the next year.

This is absolutely lovely and fun. But also maybe spare a moment to consider why the Haiti fans couldn't get treated similarly.

Scottish soccer fans in town for the World Cup made a side-trip to Fenway on Sunday and brought actual magic with them. It was such a delight and honor to get to accompany their singing.
