you can find the unabridged slide deck of my talk "von-neumann machines, dreams & the futures of IT", i gave at the developer summit in berlin today at speakerdeck.com/ufried/von-n.... it discusses some fundamental questions (re-)raised by AI. enjoy if you like ... ;)

speakerdeck.comVon-Neumann Machines, Dreams & The Futures of ITThis talk is sort of a "food for thought" talk. It takes the effects, AI currently has on software development, and looks at them from a different angle…

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

every time, i open any social media feed (which i do increasingly infrequently), "everybody screams" to the tune of "everybody hurts" by r.e.m. starts playing in my mind ... 🤷

the current state of ai-based software engineering in a nutshell – as it is advertised by the big ai companies and investors, and picked up eagerly by too many IT decision makers: inhumane, not sustainable and prone to lead to very unpleasant surprises in production ...

"AI does not work - but we have someone to blame" dierk.github.io/Home/AiDoesN...

companies talk a lot about "generalists" and "polymaths" in the context of ai but their job ads still reflect the opposite. and according to some friends who just changed jobs, they definitely filter out anyone with a hint of generalist during their interviews. /1

most companies still have a very long way to go, i am afraid. outdated company culture, habits and rituals colliding with knee-jerk ai adoption attempts, resulting in the same crap as always, just worse ... :) /e

is it just me or do you also get the "oops. something went wrong" page at linkedin regularly if you try to do something that is not just reading your feed? at least for me it feels as if linkedin's system quality went significantly down in the recent weeks.

just read in a client document: "with ai, we have to focus on value, e.g., features delivered". well, a feature delivered is _not_ value. it is just output. it only becomes value if the user accepts it (and is willing to use/pay for it). 1/2

delivering features nobody wants is the biggest problem we currently have in software development. delivering more features without clearly measuring their value will just aggravate the problem. important: users/customers define value, not business departments. this is where the problems start 2/2
