The Hunter's Moon closely aligns with the liminal festival of Samhain (the precursor to Halloween). In Celtic lore, the veil between the physical world and the spiritual realm is at its thinnest, making it a sacred time for honouring our ancestors. Art my own. #FullMoon #OctoberMoon #Folklore

In Irish mythology, Oweynagat, the Cave of the Cats at Rathcroghan in County Roscommon, is associated with the Otherworld. Later tradition links it to Samhain and supernatural beings emerging from beneath the earth. One of Ireland's most mysterious doorways leads underground. #FairyTaleTuesday

The Devil at Botallack After four hands had been played there was a knock at the door of the mill. They welcomed the stranger in out of the rain and invited him to join their game. The enigmatic stranger spoke with an unusual accent and was not so much as damp, despite coming in out of the rain.

Exploring The Piskey's Hall fogou. These underground structures are unique to Cornwall, eleven fogous remain and are all found west of Truro. Their purpose unknown, they were built in the late iron-age and into the Romano-British period.

Archaeologist's theories include use as storage, shelter from invaders or ritual use. Whenever I have visited a fogou I've had a feeling of being reborn into the world, maybe that suggests a ritual use for these enigmatic dry-stone structures tunnelled (mostly) under the ground.

In Celtic Britain fairy rings, or ‘piskey-stools’ as they were often known in Cornwall, were thought to be made by the dancing of fairies. The rings of mushrooms were believed to be sites where the ‘small folk,’ or ‘piskies,’ held their amorous fairs and danced hand-in-hand... #folkyfriday

Osteomancy is a broad term for divination using bones. Methods vary across cultures, from casting small bones to examining their arrangement. The remains of animals could become instruments for asking questions about the living. #WyrdWednesday

“So it was, on that misty morning, that Brenda set off for the capital. She knew not what she would find there, only that the time had come to move on - away from small-minded rural attitudes and people who called her ‘Oreo’ and ‘the wide panda’ - to seek a more fulfilling life.”

The Giant Bolster of St. Agnes Beacon #folklorethursday It was said he could step from The Beacon to Carn Brea in Redruth in one huge stride. The giant of Carn Brea angered the Bolster so much he cleared his own hill of stones throwing them at Carn Brea so it became covered in granite boulders.

Wyrdlings! "The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague”, Poe famously wrote and for the anniversary of his own death, we give you: “Sometimes they come back – Return from the Great Beyond” as this week’s #WyrdWednesday topic. Come, tell tales of the living dead! 💀

Carn Kenidjack known as the Hooting Carn where the wind whistling between the craggy outcrop of stones makes an unearthly sound. Local folklore tells of the devil appearing in the guise of a hooded rider hunting lost souls across the Penwith Moors. #folkyfriday #cornwall #folklore #folkhorror

One of Cornwall's most important stone circles, still in use ceremonially today. Personally I always feel nauseous and a little dizzy inside it.

Been a while since I posted anything for #StandingStoneSunday, bit remiss of me. To make amends here a slice of Boscawen-un

Something deeply troubling & shocking is happening at Exeter University*, where a mass cull of staff is planned, even though it's in surplus. No good justifications given. @jamesgdyke.info provides the details: www.technosphere.earth/the-bonfire-... *Disclosure: I have a Visiting Fellowship here. +🧵

Wheal Maid - Goon Gumpus #cornwall #kernow A typical rugged vista in Cornwall's historic mining districts. The relics of Cornwall's mining past pepper a landscape formed from spoil heaps.

Whatever you believe about crop circles, there's no doubt they bring people joy. (except the farmer 🫤) A sort of third space where you'll meet a diverse range of wonderful, interesting people.

We cross the threshold of a stone circle and are engulfed by a sense of ongoing ritual. Engulfed by a sense of intimate lithic conversations, power dynamics unfolding across slow centuries. The Long Neolithic is palpable. The Long Neolithic is living. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday
