Our new preprint is out! 🍄 Decoupled evolution of antimicrobial repertoires in lichen-forming fungi We compared many lichen-forming fungal genomes to ask how different photobiont associations relate to their antimicrobial repertoires.

Overall, AMP repertoire size is conserved, but its composition is highly variable. CAZyme and BGC repertoires show stronger differences between photobiont associations. Different molecular repertoires may be shaped by different evolutionary constraints. Preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... 🍄

Got a well intentioned email that ended with “I work at odd hours. My working hours are not necessarily your working hours. Please respond when you feel you comfortably can.” Obviously that’s code for they don’t expect a response from me. Ever.

Was so great to be part of this study, which explores iron exchange as one of the aspects of #lichen #symbiosis, a first study of its sort. Big thanks to Isidor Happacher and Hubertus Haas for putting this together! #SymbioSky 🖥️ 🧪 🦠 🧫

The mycobiont of the lichen Xanthoria parietina produces the siderophore ferrichrome which enables iron acquisition and nutrient exchange with its algal photobiont. Great collaboration with my group & @metalichen.bsky.social led by Hubertus Haas 👇 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

6/ Looking back, the 2014 S. pennellii genome was only the beginning. The first map showed us that TEs mattered. The new assemblies show us how those elements shaped genome structure, gene neighborhoods, and recombination landscapes and a decade later, we can still learn new things

5/ In S. pennellii, these IPT genes are particularly enriched in regions containing Tekay elements, including complex clusters on chromosomes 8 and 11. A burst of transposable element activity may have helped reshape these genomic regions …. and may influence recombination

2/ Indeed back in 2014, www.nature.com/articles/ng...., we saw evidence that transposable elements had contributed to its evolutionary history. The 2014 genome was already telling us that “junk DNA” was not necessarily junk as many of them were inserted close to stress genes.

The authors identify genes important for stress tolerance, metabolism and fruit maturation and sugg...

3/ Fast forward to today. With improved chromosome-scale assemblies of wild tomato genomes and better HELIXER annotations, we can now look at genome structure with much greater resolution. Digging into TE elements seemed to bring in more and more connections:
