I am a left-of-center Democrat with a German husband and two tweenagers. Glutton for punishment. Here for Carl Sagan quotes and keen observations.

These people are despicable--and juvenile. Soy boy? You worship a man who colors his hair, wears liquid foundation, a girdle, and lifts, and can't stop talking about fancy ballrooms. What a rugged man!

There's a shit-ton of actual anti-Semitism in the world today, but Netanyahu's fraudulent misuse of the term devalues it dangerously. Hamas is anti-Semitic and murderous. Netanyahu is a cynical, murderous shitheel. Mamdani is an American politician with a perverse impulse to tell blunt truths.

NY Times Pitchbot@nytpitchbot.bsky.social

Whether it’s Benjamin Netanyahu empowering Hamas, presiding over a massive intelligence failure that let them kill 1,200 Israelis on October 7th, and then killing 74,000 Palestinians in response or Zohran Mamdani pointing out that he did this, both men have fueled their bitter feud.

The Treaty of Tripoli, which was negotiated and signed while George Washington was president: "Art. 11. The Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion." Q: How many times is Jesus mentioned in the Constitution? A: Zero.

It’s hard to judge such things but the firing of the Stars and Stripes EIC is a huge scandal, or should be.

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Last month, the Pentagon fired the publisher and editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes. Two opposite headlines this morning show the results were swift.

Mosquitoes bite me despite the bug repellant I wear. For the mosquitoes, I imagine it's like using a gas station bathroom because you really, really need to go.

The Navy may change the name of a warship to honor a brave black man who served honorably in the Pearl Harbor attack to the name of a cowardly draft dodger who is so ignorant he didn’t even know what happened at Pearl Harbor, according to his then Chief of Staff accompanying him on the visit

It'll be pretty embarrassing if the dinosaurs went out with more dignity than us. They can't say they knew about the meteor for decades, knew exactly what to do about it, had all the technology and resources to stop it but didn't so five of them could own everything

1. Mitch McConnell suffered a fall on June 14 and has not been in the Senate for two months. But he's continued to get paid his salary of 174K/year. Since he entered the Senate in 1985, McConnell has voted against creating or expanding medical leave — paid and unpaid — at least 23 times.

Absolutely right. My second book underwent not one but two pretty radical reframings as a result of what I found (and did not find) in the archives.

One of the best parts of being a historian? Changing my mind. Sometimes one letter or one newspaper article sends me back to rethink everything I thought I knew. That's not failure. That's good history. 🗃️

This is obviously true and yet never occurred to me. Even when I was in the Sistine Chapel looking up.

Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg@theradr.bsky.social

Oh, and the idea that God looks like Zeus in Renaissance paintings (see: The Sistine Chapel and everything else) is quite literally the result of the era's infatuation with Greek culture and aesthetics and the decision to render the Big Bigness like actually literally Zeus and it's poisoned us

Medicaid is vastly misunderstood. Much of it goes to hospitals, kept afloat by it. Most importantly, nearly 2/3 of residence of nursing homes in America are there because of Medicaid. The huge cuts taking effect next year will cause hospital closings and mayhem for seniors.

Wishing women had been more involved in the building of houses. If they had been, New England homes would all have mudrooms.

It’s inaccurate to describe the yellow areas here as ‘his businesses’. Everyone knows it’s bribery.

In 2017, most of the revenue President Trump’s businesses generated came from his domestic golf and real estate portfolio. By the first year of his second term, his business holdings had transformed and expanded in areas where he wields immense power. Take a closer look. trib.al/313eKiF

Republicans just approved a budget blueprint that does far more than fund the war with Iran. Buried inside the $95 billion package is $10 billion to implement new nationwide voting restrictions demanded by Trump.

Six years ago, we lost John R. Lewis. He dedicated his life to defending our democracy, and we honor his legacy today by continuing the fight to protect the right to vote for all Americans. Let’s keep making good trouble.

Probably more helpful to think of them not so much as “Canadian wildfires” but rather “climate change wildfires currently consuming Canada”
