As discombobulating as Trump’s behaviour is, the French are less floored than other Europeans by the prospect of doing without America. Thank mainstream French thinking from De Gaulle to Macron Europe sounds increasingly French, in @economist.com economist.com/europe/2025/...

Emmanuel Macron’s long-standing insistence that Europe wean itself off US military support has not always been well received. But now, as Donald Trump turns away from the continent, the French president is having his I-told-you-so moment. 🔗 ow.ly/EFLF50V8aki

The summit has deliberately been framed as a pan-European, not an EU event, to allow the British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to attend and to limit the participants to “key players” (ie exclude unhelpful pro Putin voices such as the Hungarian PM, Viktor Orban). 5/

François Bayrou gets the job he always wanted as the new 🇫🇷 prime minister. But the veteran centrist still has to deal with the same split and hostile parliament, as he tries to form a government and steer through a new budget for 2025 www.economist.com/europe/2024/... In @economist.com

This is the conventional view I was more encouraged by my discussions in Brussels last week about 1/ the EU's planning for Trump 2.0 and 2/ the possibility of what may emerge after Trump 2.0 It won't be easy, of course. But the leverage of populist parties and their impact is exaggerated IMV
Want to repost this ⤵️ Trump return unlikely to be silver lining for 🇪🇺 by bringing member states closer together, rather may lead far right to double down on hardline positions. There will be variation based on far right leading a government or being in opposition, but still > trouble ahead for 🇪🇺
