Would y’all mind if I just ramble about Avengers: Armageddon for a minute? I have a lot of feelings on this, but I don’t want to make it into a video as it’s not the kind of content I want to make. However I really need to express my thoughts on this, so this is going to be quite a long thread.

… but those are for someone one more familiar with Spider-Man and Miracleman to discuss. I just wanted to talk about the “superheroes are bad” concept this book proposes again and how the publishing history of Marvel firmly debunks it.

Hopefully the Armageddon era goes somewhere more unique and interesting with this idea, but I’ll be holding off on continuing with Avengers until we get a better idea of where this is going. Sorry for the thread, I’ve just been thinking about this for a while now and wanted to talk about it.

If she were to be proven right, that would basically tell readers that superheroes are an inherently flawed concept and they shouldn’t support characters who cause more problems than they solve. So she won’t be, and we have to wait for the narrative to say so.

There are a couple other problems I could talk about, like Marvel teasing the idea of undoing One More Day when they’ve already done that multiple times before and never followed through on it or how David Colton/Miracelman is likely the single most impenetrable character in the history of comics…

Now this is not to say you can’t talk about real issues or real concepts in the Marvel universe. You absolutely can. The point is that concepts like Armageddon’s thesis are trying to deconstruct the very nature of the world of Marvel and bring to a level of “real” it can’t sustain.

So when Riani starts reiterating the same talking points that have been stated a thousand times over with nothing new to bring to the table, it’s not “real” or “grounded” or “thought-provoking. It’s tiring because she is inevitably going to be proven wrong in the end.

These are but three major villains who would have existed regardless of the existence of superheroes and would have conquered Earth many times over. THIS is the crux of what bothers me about this concept. The nature of the Marvel universe shuts this argument down before it can ever start.

“If superheroes didn’t exist, we wouldn’t be invaded by aliens.” No, you still would have, they just would have had a significantly easier time conquering the earth. It is trying to apply a level or realism that simply cannot work with the more fantastical structure of their world.

All of that would be fine and good… if Shuma-Gorath didn’t exist. You know, the ancient cosmic evil who is older than the universe and desires nothing more than the subjugation of all sentient life and has no concern or care for the social or political effects of his existence.

Or how about Annihilus, the madman from an entirely different dimension who commands an endless army of giant omnivorous bugs that only seek to consume anything and everything in their path. Or Knull, king of symbiotes and embodiment of the primordial darkness that preceded the Marvel Universe.

Arguments like what Riani proposes are this exact concept on a larger scale, as if they have this slight meta-awareness that the existence of superheroes necessitates supervillains, but lack the proper understanding of the forces that dictate their universe, A.K.A. the writers and artists.

So instead they act like they’re canonically the cause for all their problems and that everything would be better if superheroes just didn’t exist. The supervillains conveniently don’t get much of a mention and in fact seem to collectively vanish every time this argument comes up.

I’m reminded of the classic counter-argument against Batman that “he creates his own villains” and that he’s responsible for the supervillain problem in Gotham Realistically speaking, that applies to like… five or six of his villains. On a good day.

Joker, Two-Face, Bane, Catwoman, Penguin, and whatever villain the most recent movie rewrites to streamline their origins. Batman can’t be blamed for Clayface, Poison Ivy, Solomon Grundy, Scarecrow, Man-Bat, Killer Croc, or the many others who Batman didn’t even meet until they already turned evil.

It’s no secret that the nature of the Marvel and DC universes mean that the superheroes will ultimately be proven right at the end of this argument, even if they decide they need to change how they operate.

However, that means that the plot will just feel like it’s meandering until it reaches the inevitable conclusion, with the opposite side of the argument being spearheaded by a character who the universe’s past canon will paint as a massive idiot who has no idea what they’re talking about.

This is Renata Riani, and her very first lines of dialogue are about how superheroes are always playing god and deciding humanity’s future for them while lording over the common man. This immediately raised a red flag for me concerning the foreseeable future of the Avengers.

This concept of “critiquing the idea of super-powered people and their influence on global politics and society at large” is not a new idea. It’s the basis for one of my favorite indie series right now, The Power Fantasy. The problem is what Riani represents within the big two, especially Marvel.

When all of this started, when we had just learned about Avengers: Armageddon and how it would shape the foreseeable future of the Avengers, I was admittedly rather excited about it, especially with the creative team involved and what they seemed to be setting up with the miniseries.

Now we move forward to the day the first issue drops. I bought my copy, opened it, and began to read it like many others did. My interested for this series and where it was going dropped to near zero the exact second this character appeared.

Will probably make a follow-up to this video now that the Midnight books are out now I plan on finishing the Doctor Strange vid first, so this will likely be more late October/early November

Forgot to share this here, but I already made a shitpost about the Ultimate Universe, so it’s only fair I made one about the Midnight Universe as well youtu.be/u79aVHPE_4o?...

Finally managed to actually write and record for the Doctor Strange vid. It’s only gonna be a few minutes long as I kept down to a brief summary and my exact thoughts on the topic. Editing is going smoothly and the video should be out soon, hoping to release by the end of the week.
