There may not be an iPhone Duo in my (near) future, but this baby should be here next week. My first PCB. Can't wait to see if it works or (honestly, NOT unlikely) if it's a dud. 🤞

My iPhone Duo detection script fired this morning and I scrambled to pick up the unit(s) available at my local stores. By the time I got to checkout they were gone. I tried three times to put a phone in the bag, but they don't hold them after that, and then poof, they're gone. 🫠

I wrote up a little script to check my local Apple Stores for Duo pickup availability (and fire a local notification if something comes up). Expecting to see a LOOOOOOOOT of "none" in here.

The purpose of X is to spread far right white nationalism, full stop. If you participate there without acknowledging that, you're complicit. Same goes for Fox News and its lesser competitors.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I don't say this lightly: this approach is clearly the future of software development. I have a blog post brewing that touches on the subject, but fuzz testing and formal verification at scale will make all software an order of magnitude better, safer, and more reliable.

anthropic.comLLMs are making formal software verification feasible at a much larger scaleClaude formally proved security properties in the compiled code of 123 open-source libraries. Along the way, it found bugs that had eluded detection for years.

I don't like horror movies, but I watched Obsession last night anyway, and now I'm 100% back to not liking horror movies. What is *wrong* with you people

You know how Neil Finn left Crowded House, did a bit of solo work, and then came back? This is like that. And it's awesome, and I hope it does great. (And like Neil Finn, Ben is an amazing talent, so the metaphor sticks)

This post is unavailable.

It has come to my attention that this metaphor has irreconcilably dated me, for which I DO NOT APOLOGIZE IF YOU DONT KNOW NEIL FINN GO LOOK HIM UP HES AWESOME

Went to my local Apple Authorized Reseller and played with a Duo. Amazing device. I get it: it's both the worst and best phone ever. The guy at the store laughed at me when I asked about daily stock coming in for walk-in sales. Cool.

My wife's away for the weekend starting now, so it's time to get *wild*: gonna grab sushi at some point, and totally not use my CPAP overnight.

i don't think we can come to a reasonable compromise with this

Very interesting thread! Supply chains affecting the development of computers? *Do go on!*

Hey, it’s the official release day for Seeing Like a Supply Chain! And of course I’m swamped with grading and lesson-planning, but maybe I can say a little about the book and the process of researching it. yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300...

Democrats are preparing to investigate Musk if they win control of the House in November, Politico reports. Potential probes would focus on his DOGE leadership, federal job cuts, alleged data breaches, government contracts and Starlink’s role in Ukraine.

This passage from The Cave and the Light by Arthur Herman stopped me in my tracks. On John Stuart Mill, who established our modern sense of liberal individualism, talking about freedom of expression — even of expressing total BS — as essential for maintaining civil society.

Think of it: that whackadoo that says Alberta should secede or women can't lead causes an allergic reaction in wider society to reaffirm those values. It's happening now with Trump too. This is the best thing I've read in a long time.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

The doxing of this complainant is vile, and revealing of WHY so many victims of sexual assault do not report it. Decent people who hang out at X (I know several), or who continue to post there about politics or sports or whatever, are complicit in Musk’s site’s tolerating and encouraging this.

X has made a comeback with some communities, namely AI and tech, but it is not Twitter of old. On X, users have been spreading the name of a woman they think is Cornell's Jane Doe. One particular post doxed a woman's address and phone numbers and was viewed 1.4 million times.

I don't know why I haven't tried the Indigo app earlier for using Bluesky and Mastodon… this app is exactly what I was missing since the removal of Tweety, for the old people like me who remember… 😅 (just don't know why my Bluesky account is always disconnected on macOS)

I love that thousands of Albertans showed up to give a huge "fuck you" to the separatists. See you Monday, assholes.

Canada is building big again. Alberta is at the very heart of it.

So… ha ha… I thought the pre-order was 5PM PST. 30 minutes late to the party, I'm not getting my Duo until the end of January. I know not a single soul should or will care, but I'm feeling a bit crushed right now.

Apple friends, I know your employer continually lets you down and disrespects your work. Reminder that ignoring bugs that don't impact your direct team is an easy and safe option. Your coworkers deserve some kind of (legal) resistance.

I don’t know what is worse, how corruptly idiotic this is, or how many people will nod their heads, brow thoughtfully furrowed, and think it is sagacious.

Actual Cancel Culture of a significant cultural figure [unlike where far right extremists engage in hate speech & are held accountable]. It’s extremism like this, & the disinterest of the current UK Labour govt in stopping the shift to the far right, that’s deeply worrying.
