Building bridges between open-source projects is a big part of why I joined @marimo.io. I got to know the @prefix.dev folks through @scipyconf.bsky.social, and worked together to make computational research easier to reproduce and share. Special thanks to @julianhofer.eu and Ruben Arts!

marimo@marimo.io

marimo now supports @prefix_dev Pixi sandboxes! Share portable notebooks with dependencies beyond Python, including CUDA-enabled @PyTorch, ffmpeg and R. Already using Conda or Pixi? Bring your ecosystem to marimo’s reactive notebooks, with Conda and PyPI requirements saved alongside your code.

pixi 0.76 can now run standalone python scripts in isolated, on-demand environments. dependencies live inline via PEP 723, like uv supports, but pixi can layer on conda and system dependencies too. fun to build this with @prefix.dev folks. coming to a @marimo.io notebook near you SOON.

Every layer of a Dolly Parton outfit had a job: structure, sparkle, warmth, all of it in service of the show. Particle detectors are built the same way, layer after layer, each tuned for a different job, working together to catch what matters. Thank you #DollyParton for the sparkle and the song

Belle II has now accumulated the world's largest Υ(4S) dataset, surpassing Belle! Belle II's total integrated luminosity is 757 fb⁻¹ of Υ(4S) data and 864 fb⁻¹ of overall data. We hope to continue increasing the dataset for the rest of this data taking Run, which will continue until the summer.

Imposter syndrome doesn’t mean you don’t belong. It often means the opposite, that you care deeply about what you do. I asked my colleagues to join me, because many of the most accomplished, world-leading scientists have felt like “frauds” at times. #academia #impostersyndrome #physics

I think the best way to enjoy this list, which contains lots of predictable choices (made as it was by committee), is to find a book you like, click to see who voted for it, and then look at the voters' other top 10 choices. You might find something else you like that you haven't read.

The Guardian launches its '100 best novels of all time' list, with numbers 100-81. I was one of the 172 authors, critics and academics polled. Afaik, two of my ten choices made the final cut, one in this first tranche:

If you wanted to feel even worse about this, I would recommend reading this paper where researchers were able to get production language models to reproduce large amounts of (copyrighted) books: arxiv.org/abs/2601.02671

arxiv.orgExtracting books from production language modelsMany unresolved legal questions over LLMs and copyright center on memorization: whether specific training data have been encoded in the model's weights during training, and whether those memorized dat...

Profoundly sad to read news of Roger Barlow's passing. A great physicist, educator and communicator, who lived by his principles and would share his wisdom with anyone who asked. The world is now a poorer place.

I like journal clubs where you are only allowed to say positive things about a paper. They are so much more satisfying.

Tom Hartley@tomhartley.me.uk

My suspicion from dealing with Reviewer 2 over a 30-year career was that PIs can contribute by supporting balance in e.g., journal clubs. I think new generations of GLPs are raised at PhD/postdoc level, when trainees are encouraged to be destructively critical of other labs' work.

Reminder if you find yourself somehow running out of space on your multi-TB laptop to check your ~/.cache size. I got 150 GB of disk back today by doing some trivial cleanup. ``` du -ch ~/.cache | tail -1 | cut -f1 ``` Caches are wonderful things and having large caches on large disks is great!

Scientists, academics, researchers: We’re excited to share that @altmetric.com is now tracking mentions of your research on Bluesky! 🧪

Altmetric@altmetric.com

There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research. A Place of Joy.
