Research scientist at UW-Madison data science institute working on #LHC #physics and data science with the ATLAS experiment @ CERN and IRIS-HEP. PhD @ SMU
Today my PhD student (for one last day) @orochman.bsky.social is defending his thesis on neural emulators. Check out his latest paper on sampling diffusion models under hard constraints arxiv.org/abs/2601.21033 (NeurIPS 2026)
BREAKING: Major shakeup in NSF leadership. Brian Stone, who has been performing the duties of NSF director since April 2025, is retiring on Dec. 31. Rebecca Keiser, who has been acting chief of staff, is also retiring, Oct. 31.
Unclear who will replace Stone, since O'Neill's nom hasn't moved.
By very happy coincidence I happened to be staying at the same hotel as my colleague @samforeman.bsky.social today while we’re at different conferences. It was also the first time we had met IRL after about a decade of being aware of each other’s work!
In response to the eMudhra / emSign certificate security incident we've published guidance for Python users to update CA certificates: discuss.python.org/t/informatio...#security#Python#pki
Grant peer review costs a lot: ~$40k per application in reviewer time, with proposals reviewed again and again.
In @thetransmitter.bsky.social , I propose a partial lottery: reviewers decide pass/fail, chance picks among the passes, and "unmissable" ideas and ECRs get protected routes.
#TIL about another nice Rust-ification of Unix utilities from @sharkdp.bsky.social: diskus - A minimal, fast alternative to 'du -sh'.
github.com/sharkdp/diskus
I of course am installing it from @conda-forge.org with
```
pixi global install diskus
```
Slightly blown away to learn that I've been using 'cf.' incorrectly for the past 15 years or so. I have both been writing it as "c.f." and also thinking that it meant "see also" not "compare".

”I hope this reflects on the really courageous people who joined me in the beginning of this project when no respectable conservative physicists would have joined me, but many talented people did, and that's why I'm here.”
- physics laureate Francis Halzen speaking at today's prize announcement.
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2026 #NobelPrize in Physics to Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.”
marimo now supports @prefix_dev Pixi sandboxes!
Share portable notebooks with dependencies beyond Python, including CUDA-enabled @PyTorch, ffmpeg and R.
Already using Conda or Pixi? Bring your ecosystem to marimo’s reactive notebooks, with Conda and PyPI requirements saved alongside your code.
Wow, I just found out that our team has been scooped by Anthropic

#SciPy2026 talks are up on YouTube now! www.youtube.com/@SciPy-Conf/...
If you weren't able to attend the conference you can still watch all of the talks and if you did attend the conference but can't be in two place at once or were enjoying the hallway track you can catch up on all you missed! :D

RIP Dolly Parton. There are so many wonderful things to remember her for, but the one I like to bring up is all the work she did for childhood literacy. Probably its greatest advocate in our lifetimes.
God bless Dolly Parton.
Entertainer, childhood literacy advocate, and *scientific philanthropist* Dolly Parton was born #OTD in 1946.
Mostly known for singing and songwriting, Dolly's Imagination Library program has distributed over 100 million free books to kids around the world. 🦋 📖 🎶

People in the coffee world will usually give you the recommendations for better coffee as:
1. Buy good quality coffee.
2. Buy the best grinder you can afford.
but I think an often unsaid 0th recommendation is to clean your equipment thoroughly and regularly.
Example: I just replaced the group head gasket on my espresso machine and cleaned the group diffuser screen. Despite cleaning the group and backflushing regularly, this still made a noticeable improvement in the espresso I'm pulling. Take cleaning seriously!
Yale is on the verge of cutting a deal with Trump to change its admission procedures.
Reminder for any school dealing with Trump's extortion: You can't appease a tyrant.
Surrendering to authoritarianism only invites more of it.
Proud of UW-Madison and the Madison area's showing with Genesis (even though my proposal wasn't selected). Happy to say that the Data Science Institute is supporting some of the successful proposals.
UW–Madison will receive 5 Phase I Genesis Mission awards from the Department of Energy addressing urgent energy, scientific, and engineering challenges with AI and advanced computing. @uwmadison.bsky.social earned more awards than any other public university in the US. news.wisc.edu/5-projects-a...
The Sprints are one of our favorite parts of the conference! 🎉
This is where many of us made our very first contribution to the Scientific Python ecosystem, thanks to the welcoming and friendly maintainers who make it easy to get involved. 🫶
Here's to all the new contributors started this week 💙
💛 That's a wrap on Day 1 of #SciPy2026!
Today's tutorials covered Python fundamentals, LLM agents, GPU computing, causal inference, interactive notebooks, scientific web apps, and image analysis. 🚀
Looking forward to another full day of tutorials tomorrow!
Approaching ***300,000*** comments on the proposed OMB regulations on federal grants.
TODAY IS YOUR LAST DAY, GET YOUR PERSONALIZED (NOT COPIED-AND-PASTED!) COMMENT IN BY NOON EST.

I've got a suitcase full of coffee, a brain full of computational workflows I'm excited to teach, and a heart full of excitement to see amazing colleagues and friends. Must be time for #SciPy2026!
New: The National Science Foundation is preparing to claw back some $500 million in funds from some of its core science programs in physics, math, computer science, and engineering in order to fund a project from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
⚡ Tutorial Spotlight: Reproducible CUDA doesn't have to be complicated! Matthew Feickert, Ruben Arts & Katrina Riehl will show you how to easily create reproducible scientific and AI/ML environments that leverage GPU acceleration across multiple machines and platforms with Pixi. 🚀
Not true. In their list of grievances, the Founding Fathers complained that King George III was blocking colonial laws that would promote immigration and make it easier for foreign settlers to become citizens.
Our not-too-secret project allows Pixi to depend on packages built from source. Build graphs, multi-language support and more are handled transparently. Sounds great, doesn't it? Then let us finally introduce it officially! prefix.dev/blog/pixi-b...

Thanks to Trump's tax cuts, 88 corporations — including Coinbase, CVS, and Disney — paid ZERO federal income tax last year.
They also spent $852M on political donations and lobbying.
Their combined tax savings: over $26 BILLION (a 3,000% ROI!)
We must break this corrupt cycle.
