Hey #portfolioday, I'm Zé. I draw, I write, I make music. I'm busy making a new book but I'm open to smallish commissions. Also I welcome you to check out my shops where I sell books and prints and my pay-what-you-want Patreon where I'm posting the new book as I make it.

TWO WORLDS (1985)
 Oil on canvas - 36” x 22”

During one of the Ethiopian famines, I came across a magazine photo of a desert filled with a multitude of crude burial mounds extending off to the horizon. I was struck by the implications of the image... #art #booksky 🪐📚

Well, I could mention the time a dude gave me a DVD full of D&D 3.5 books and I just spent a lot of time reading them over and over. BUT more significant was the fact that when I had 6 or 8 I had Dragonology books and I would read them over and over, and imagine growing up to research dragons.

"How did you get into TTRPGs?" While working as a teacher, the institute's lesson plan called for the instructor to GM an in-house basic d6 based system. It was so shit I spent the rest of my time working there hacking it until it was a playable thing.

Style study 4/4 - Frank Frazetta The finale! It was hard to mimic a traditionally painted style in Paint Tool SAI, and while it did turn out better than I expected, it's definitely not as close a match as the previous studies. A lot of thoughts about this one in alt text!

Style study 3/4 - Mike Mignola From all the studies, I probably learned the most from this one, and Mignola's use of heavy black shadows and simple shapes was a delight to try out. More thoughts in alt text!
