The vaunted 'cartoon animals jerking off and being dirtbags' genre of autobio comics (usually published by by Fantagraphics or like Drawn & Quarterly) is such a specific thing in American comics to be bizarre. Captures a minuscule portion of life in NA, and really comics should be about poor and...

Rev. Dr. Derek M Ballard PhD@derekmballard.bsky.social

in American comics publishing there's a tendency in autobio towards the transgressive rather than the subversive. that's why you'll see a plethora of graphic novels about drug use & being horny rather than books about poverty or hunger. ngl I like a lot of the latter. I think it's a class thing idk

working folk. It's one of few artistic mediums that has very little 'buy in', and was mostly produced by poor and working folk for poor and working folk, and as a medium it is so immediate that it can capture that kind of day-to-day struggle and just living, but instead we get Crumb ripoffs forever.

What fans? Because it mostly seems to be enjoyed about and written by SFF people who are jumping ship from the trend treadmill that defines modern genre publishing. I think if this conversation was about, say, horror writers trying to change romance, it'd have a much more different tone.

Got blocked for this relatively benign observation on a tweet mocking people, and I'm not even a horror writer. I am primarily a fantasy writer who just wants fantasy to be more interesting it is, rather than trying to chase the trends of other genres because they are popular.

the whole 'cozy horror' thing is so exhausting because on one side you have horror creators and fans who are distressed at the endless push to sanitize everything they love and on the other side you have people who clearly don't like horror saying shit like 'the nightmare before christmas is horror'

I think, ultimately, the big divide in SFFH spaces is between people who are fandom-oriented, and those who are (for a lack of better, less sensational term) art-oriented, and those two groups just have very different ideas about what art is suppose to be about, which creates friction.

Not the first person to make this distinction, of course, doubt I'll be the last, but it does seem to be something of a breaking point rn. The recurring discourses are mostly metacommentary on this divide including the current one. I think people are speaking different languages when it comes to art

here's a thread that expands on this is a way that is better worded than my distinct bsky.app/profile/phil...

Personal theory time: I travel in many different social circles. I'm an extravert, I've a wide range of interests, and I'm fairly charismatic by fat white nerd standards, so I tend to find myself a seat amongst all sorts of disparate social groups and communities. Not a bag, just an observation.

new promise to myself: less politics, not because they aren't important, but because me arguing about them pushing my own politics forward, more art, writing, and natural wonder because the internet should be fun

I really hate the 'we must defend bad art because the Hypothetical Standard Woman likes it' argument. Choice feminism is about degrading feminism into a series of consumer choices that are correctly gender and marketed, nothing radical or boundary pushing about it (just like cozy art).

Dorian Dawes@doriandawes.bsky.social

I am not worth this much of a big thread taking down an essay you clearly did not read while you try and position me as a sexist coming after "girly things" which jfc the gender essentialism that comes up in these topics.

Coziness is fundamentally about escapism, which in turn flattens human life into less complex and less honest forms to tell stories that preserve comfort against all other thing, and that's why a lot of horror people find it repulsive when applying that formula to horror. I'm not a genre utopian...

horror is susceptible to the forces of the market as much of anyone, but my particular bugbear with this cozy movement is that it is a colonizing force, because art becomes about comfort, discomfort becomes an attack on that comfort, and all of a sudden art is a place for cultivating moral hygiene.

driving my tesla roadster, i ask grok to schedule a dentist appointment. it generates a gothic anime version of the dentist’s receptionist with huge tits that asks me if i want a cleaning. i get so hard my neuralink activates the tesla’s thrusters and i slam 90 mph into a wall killing me instantly

Reading The West Passage rn by Jared Pechaček, and while a lot of people have pointed towards the Gormenghast books as a kind of anchor point, it actually reminds a lot of Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland as well. Really enjoying my time with it so far.

I don't know if that is intentional of not, or just a byproduct of fabulist tone of the book which is then reflected in both Oz and Alice, but its a kind of mode that is not often utilized in a lot of modern fantasy books (or at least stuff I read), so its be a very interesting change of pace.

(a big part of it is the whimsy without losing the stakes, and without being ironically detached or knowing. Very effective writing and use of setting and mode to evoke a broader aesthetic sense that directs the reading. A lot of stuff to learn from it, as a writer I think!)

Pretend intellectuals cry about how social media isn't the meeting of the minds after throwing a month long tantrum while badmouthing actual intellectuals in a field they are unfamiliar with who disagree with them on their idiotic ideas, and pretend like they aren't the problem.

Curiosity needs to be cultivated, and I don't think the guy who cries whenever a real expert in a field that doesn't flatter his priors is the guy to lead the charge in the culture to advocate for that imo far more likely he's just mad people don't agree with him than anything actually real

I think you should probably bare in mind that ideologies that are identical to Zionism in expression and form were the cause of centuries of extermination attempts of the people you think are incapable of understand intergenerational because they aren't Jewish.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

I just recognise that there's a very deep sensitivity here. It can be hard for non-Jews to understand the intergenerational trauma and terror of people who have been subject to centuries of extermination attempts, merely for being who they are. Please try to bear the context in mind. Thank you.

Just extremely cynical (nad inarguably immoral) to try to weaponize language like that to defend a political and ideological project that is currently the cause of a genocide. My people were colonized, those that did it spoke like Zionists, but I guess i couldn't possible understand.

I think there is a contradiction here, because the choices of where an adaption differs from the source material is a meaning-making choice (as said as much further on)--but that meaning if bound by the adaptions nature as an adaption, and in relation to the source material. It can't be a...

It's fascinating to me how many people in the SFF literary sphere - including professional critics & scholars who should know better - assess adaptations primarily as successes & failures of reading rather than separate texts w/ their own aims, which Gerwig's The Magician's Nephew clearly is.

(as in, literature, nor other art forms, doesn't exist to be adapted into television/film, and the desire for adaption I think is often interrelated to a further desire to simplify and flatten texts to make them more 'consumable'. Maybe this is too cynical, but given the shape of culture right now

maybe a necessary intervention. I actually don't have much of an opinion on Greta's the Magician's Nephew, and obviously some adaptions complicate and heighten the source material (like the godfather), but less people read now than ever since mass literacy, and they read worse)

Furthermore, I think given many film industries perchance for strip mining other areas of creative labour for 'IPs', maybe we should be a little bit more cynical about the role of adaption, and drawing out of meaning of texts for easier, less complex adaptions. I love film, I love many adaptions...

but, I think treating adaptions as something wholly separated from what is adapting is not foolhardy, but ultimately, often makes the original text substrate in the broader social existence of it. I think many film people treat other art forms as a market rather than something that is, indeed, art.

separate text, and while you should consider the choices of adaption as meaningful choices I don't think there is anything wrong in finding that lacking 'faithfulness' is negative experience for people already familiar with the source material (and their own encounter and interpretation of it) /2

He, and subsequentially most academic elites how share similar beliefs on the 'other half', only believes this because he shares a class interest with those who disagree with his values or on his interpretation of facts, and thus mostly safe from reprisal. Most people do not have that luxury.
