I just had an IRL jumpscare this morning. Heard a ringtone on my phone I've never heard before. I pull it out of my pocket and my selfie camera is on, showing my face, in some call app I've never seen before, with the incoming caller listed as some random name+number Gmail address.

So heads up if you have an android phone. If you don't use Google Meet, force disable it, apparently it's another source of bullshit spam/scams. There's also a setting in it to ONLY allow incoming calls from saved contacts, but it's off by default.

ALL of this happened before I'd had my first cup of morning coffee, btw. Awful jumpscare to start the day lmao.

After being super confused for several seconds I decided to just hold the power button and turn off my phone. I looked up some stuff about it online, eventually turned my phone back on to investigate further. Long story short, it was the Google Meet app, which is force installed in android.

Apparently the call hadn't actually connected, the app just shows your face on selfie camera so you can see how you look before actually answering a call. So that's why mashing the end call button apparently didn't do anything I did end up Force Stopping/disabling the app after figuring it out.

I immediately tried mashing the end call button over and over but nothing happened. I couldn't even close whatever app it was. I'm doing all this while trying not to let the camera see my face in case it was already sending it to the other person.

No wonder Tim Epic was so upset over Steam's AI disclaimer policy.

NEW: Epic Games has delayed its upcoming (not yet announced) Star Wars + Marvel shooter as it pivots to complete AI game development. "No more hand-written code," a director told staff. All art "generated with full AI workflows." Full scoop: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

I filled out one of those my 9 games things. Very hard to narrow down the list. Tried to get a variety of stuff from back in my teens until more recent stuff. #my9games

Couple games I totally forgot while making the list that could easily have made the cut, COD4, Minecraft, maybe Burnout 3 or Katamari as well.

Lots from my younger childhood too, Pokemon Red/Blue, Super Mario Bros/World. The whole Metal Gear Solid series could easily have been on there.

Well shit, didn't make the cut for the initial Steam Frame batch, and knowing how much worse the AI memory/storage bullshit is getting, I don't have hopes for getting one till 2027 or later at this rate. Staying in the queue just in case, but all expectations are gone at this point.

Steam Frame about to go live. I wonder how many people are gonna be shocked by the price tag likely being over $1k, or if most folks have mentally prepared themselves for anything gaming related being stupid expensive in this era.

I'm sorry, 15 hours a month on the ULTIMATE plan? I know I'm probably a bit of an outlier with how many hours I play per month, but how does a company supposedly catering to "hardcore gamers" think that's anywhere near reasonable allotment of time. The cloud streaming future SUCKS hard.

Seeing the images in this thread, and this application of DLSS5 to Skyrim, it does seem to be mostly just a yassify face filter. Most glaringly, it does basically nothing to the image when enabled for the Argonian or Khajiit since it can't detect them as faces. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJeq...

I know a lot of people around the Twitch ecosystem follow me so heads up! Twitch has opted you in to using your channel content for generative slop. Probably wise to uncheck this even if you don't actively stream.

Haven't really delved into art for quite a while, but hopped into Vermillion VR and did a quick painting practice in a mountain lake setting. It got me looking forward to really diving back into more VR art when the Steam Frame comes out. #VermillionVR #VRArt #art

Celebrating the 4th this year by deploying a few 1.5kt tactical nukes on a tank factory in the game Nuclear Option. Very absurd game with the premise: What if we just said "fuck it, we ball" when it comes to nuclear weapons in a modern military setting.

Steam machine pre-orders up, not AS bad as I feared but still might be a hard sell to console gamers at over $1k for the base model. The randomized pre-order queue is an interesting approach.

I think Valve really was targeting around the $700 base price when they announced the Steam Machine last year. Given how SSD and Memory prices have risen that looks to be about a $150 rise in SSD and ~$200 rise in RAM prices. (note the memory graph shows 2x16GB so i'm halving that.)

Watching Jerma do his top ~360ish games of all time list has been fascinating. Really goes to show how VASTLY different someone's experience in the hobby of video games can be. There is such a massive breadth of experiences to be had when it comes to video games.

Not sure how getting a trailer up on the Summer Games Fest thing works, but if you had to pay money to put your game on there and the framerate was that terrible on the Twitch stream and the audio was desynced like that on Youtube you probably deserve a refund from Geoff.

I don't know if we're ever going to see the Steam Machine or Frame at this point. The price is probably going to make them DoA if they do release any time in the next year or two. Really unfortunate timing for Valve that the entire home PC market is vanishing.

A Blender technique I've been really into these days is hand painting black and white maps for 90's stylized shadows. I'm still working on getting good at it but it's a really useful technique for getting cool shadows that don't make physical sense. #b3d I'll explain in the comments:

Kinda fascinating. I wonder if this plays a big role in the wrong-ness people innately feel about the look of many AI-generated images? Our brains are wired for natural perspectives and subtle flaws like this stand out to us even if we can't immediately point them out.

REALLY hope this is nothing more than reputation laundering (which is also gross given the harms these AI companies are causing/enabling) but I don't blame anyone for being sketchy of any association with these companies, always best to assume the worst intentions until proven otherwise.

LMAO this is literally in walking distance from me. People get stuck all the time down there thinking they know how to drive on soft sand. Makes great business for local tow truck drivers. Maybe the owner didn't realize their broken LOD mesh weighs more than many fullsize trucks.
