New pre-print and tool alert ! This one addressing a long-standing viromics issue: we were missing a tool that can reliably assign broad host categories (e.g. prokaryote vs eukaryote) to novel viruses. VHAMSTeR is now available for this thanks to very talented postdoc @susiegriggo.bsky.social !!

Susie Grigson@susiegriggo.bsky.social

🚨 New preprint 🚨 We’ve discovered millions of viruses from sequencing data but we don’t always know who they infect. Our new tool, VHAMSTeR generates broad virus host predictions across the tree of life (prokaryote, plant, animal, fungi and protist hosts) A thread 🧵👇 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

How common are frequency dependent fitness effects? New preprint out today 👇 doi.org/10.1101/2025...

doi.orgFrequency-dependent fitness effects are ubiquitousIn simple microbial populations, the fitness effects of most selected mutations are generally taken to be constant, independent of genotype frequency. This assumption underpins predictions about evolutionary dynamics, epistatic interactions, and the maintenance of genetic diversity in populations. Here, we systematically test this assumption using beneficial mutations from early generations of the Escherichia coli Long-Term Evolution Experiment (LTEE). Using flow cytometry-based competition assays, we find that frequency-dependent fitness effects are the norm rather than the exception, occurring in approximately 80\% of strain pairs tested. Most competitions exhibit negative frequency-dependence, where fitness advantages decline as mutant frequency increases. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the strength of frequency-dependence is predictable from invasion fitness measurements, with invasion fitness explaining approximately half of the biological variation in frequency-dependent slopes. Additionally, we observe violations of fitness transitivity in several strain combinations, indicating that competitive relationships cannot always be predicted from fitness relative to a single reference strain alone. Through high-resolution measurements of within-growth cycle dynamics, we show that simple resource competition explains a substantial portion of the frequency-dependence: when faster-growing genotypes dominate populations, they deplete shared resources more rapidly, reducing the time available for fitness differences to accumulate. Our results demonstrate that even in a simple model system designed to minimize ecological complexity, subtle ecological interactions between closely related genotypes create frequency-dependent selection that can fundamentally alter evolutionary dynamics. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

This is great. I think more "live" forms of evaluation are going to have to be more common if we're going to be taking AI generated "science" seriously.

Fantastic paper about the evolution and untapped potential of non-ribosomal peptide synthases. Congrats Georg and team! 👇🏻

We wanted to understand why academics leave their jobs (doi.org/10.1126/scia...). We asked: “Tell us your story: what needs/needed to be different about your position?” I thought we would get a few hundred responses and I’d learn a bit more about the context of academic retention for myself.

doi.orgGender and retention patterns among U.S. facultyWomen faculty are more likely to leave their jobs than men, most often due to workplace climate, rather than work-life balance.

Also, if mirror bacteria ever establish themselves (ie, reach a significant population size outside a lab), one would need to treat many other vertebrate species along with humans. It would be a colossal, even impossible undertaking -- best avoided by never allowing the creation of mirror bacteria

Adding my $.02 to the many quotes in this article: Helen Branswell's reporting on ID epidemiology was always so clear and informative. A cool drink of spring water when everything seemed muddy. A treasure. RIP.

HOLY S*@#$ I SPOKE TOO SOON! TAYLOR KNIBB IS IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPION🇺🇸! She threw up, got passed by the 2025 champ Lovseth, walked, pulled it together, and held steady. When Lovseth faltered dramatically with 1K to go, she passed for the win!

Amazing race, congrats Vincent Luis🥇, Gustav Iden🥈 and Matthew Marquardt🇺🇸🥉, a med student at OSU! And hang in there Taylor Knibb, you'll win this soon, fabulous race by the women, finishing soon!

Challenge 2: the Darwinian threshold. Groups need a life cycle before they can evolve one, a classic chicken-and-egg problem. The way out: life cycles can be scaffolded "for free," either by the environment (e.g., floods dispersing cells) or by physics (packing stress fracturing snowflake yeast).

Challenge 1: forming groups. Across yeast, algae, bacteria and holozoans, lab evolution shows group formation arises fast (within 100–750 generations) and convergently, often through simple mutations like loss of ACE2 in snowflake yeast.
