The 5-year cancer survival rate is up to 70% SIDS deaths have decreased by over 50% 89% decline in tornado deaths All thanks to federal investment in science and OUR tax dollars at work!

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

My friend had prostate cancer. Caught early with a basic blood test. Treated in one day without surgery, no side effects, has been cancer free and it's like it never happened. The advances in cancer treatment have been nothing short of revolutionary. (and yet - Fuck Cancer, we need more progress)

I am now getting 2-3 different species of spam per day from people who want to share a plan to get more people to buy my book. Like they want me to pay them for a report that they ask AI to produce in a minute, is that the scam? Based on the volume, I suspect it's been a lucrative scam.

Draft Kings Decision 2026

Oliver Darcy@oliverdarcy.bsky.social

Scoop from @brettlogiurato.bsky.social: CBS has sold its local election night coverage to DraftKings, stirring more controversy inside the David Ellison-owned company. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/cbs-draftk...

It's fascinating to move to a new workplace with an infinitely more streamlined and pleasant bureaucracy for travel and procurement, but everybody is just as annoyed and frustrated. Y'all don't know how good you have it!

Meanwhile, I'm still awaiting reimbursement from travel that I completed two months ago at the old place. They expect us to calculate an exchange rate for every receipt to three decimal points at the daily exchange rate. Per diem not allowed, even if it's a federal award.

"why would I ever need a task to be done faster" come on, guys. Because we're dying. Because we are literally all dying all the time. Because we're running out of time. The fact that it's often hard to measure or stupidly measured doesn't mean "saving time" isn't an important thing to human beings

We do some things slowly because the process is the purpose. Other things might require a slow deliberative process to be done well. But for a lot of other stuff, the product is the purpose and if you can do it faster, that’s great! Each of us gets 4000 weeks or so. Let’s use them well.

You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

Nomenclatural peeve of the day: a blog post is not a blog. A blog is like a magazine or a newsletter. A blog post is like an article in a magazine or a single newsletter missive.

If you are an MIT alum, and your kid applies to MIT, you promptly get a letter saying “We do not care that you are an alum and do not call us to whine. We do not do legacy admissions so STFU.” It’s glorious.

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

Remember: Darwin's note of "I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything" was written on Oct 1 (1861). Thus we are free to celebrate Very Poorly And Very Stupid Hatred Day today.

The student got excellent writing instruction--they went to an IB school, one of their parents is a professor, and they got through high school without ever using AI tools. But now, they feel they have to abandon all they learned about good writing, to avoid being accused of cheating with AI.

The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

Some thoughts on prioritization rules of thumb with tight federal budgets at #NSF: brianomeara.info/posts/ruleof... (Basically, protect early career folks first, but also more on ways to help w transparency on this to reduce anxiety)

I did an internet search for a zip code. The search engine result provided the correct zip code. The AI-assisted output, which was right above the search engine result, gave a different zip code. Guess which code was correct?

Just got a haircut and the stylist asked A LOT of stuff on MAHA themes. Does beef tallow on your face really reverse aging?? Etc. I responded with no science at all and we really connected. When people talk about trust in science, I think about the patience we need and the results we'll never see

One of the biggest El Niños was 1997, causing a big drought in Costa Rica, when I was doing a big sampling of litter ants in that dry season. I so badly want to replicate coinciding with this El Niño, 30 years later. I just need 2 weeks and a research permit. The hard part is the 2 weeks.

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.
