In my sopranos rewatch, I’m now at the point where they occasionally talk about how they’re skimming money from the construction of the Newark Museum of Science and Trucking lmao

It hadn't occurred to me before but there's a lot of Simpsons DNA in the Sopranos, from the little throwaway jokes like this, to the way they fill out the cast of locals until the side characters have side characters who have plotlines of their own

"If you want an answer, you need to provide a clear example of what you mean using one of the online datasets explicitly used for this purpose. Nobody knows what you are asking and this is an abuse of everybody's time. But I will try." <Proceeds to answer the question perfectly.>

In some ways, this feels like the spiritual sequel to the Grey Poupon “controversy”

Regime Accountant, CPA ☠️🎢@regimecpa.bsky.social

The Cheesecake Factory “controversy” is nice because it’s a rerun of the exact kind of stupid shit we had to sit through every day of the Obama administration. Now Zoomers don’t have to feel left out of having their own Obama “controversy” to reference.

I learned that when George R R Martin started making Game of Thrones money he bought a second house next door to his current house, and that’s been my rich person fantasy ever since

beautiful moment in Wawa today… older dude, probably 70-75, wearing a sharp tan suit with a crisp colorful button-up underneath, waiting in line with a coffee young guy, probably 20-25, walks up and taps him on the shoulder “yo, you look fresh as hell, man” old dude might still be beaming

There was a great tiktok that was a couple flipping over cards with their Hear Me Outs on them, and the girl’s were all the normal ones, like the Robin Hood fox and David Bowie in Labyrinth, and the guy’s were like “the evil computer program from a made-for-TV Disney movie from 1980”

The deal with the cheesecake restaurant, of course, is that it’s *not* fancy while still being a place that works for special occasions. You can go there to celebrate a high school graduation, you can take little kids and grandparents there, you can book a giant table for a big group.

We need a name for this game where you pretend that Ordinary Americans are basically Charles Dickens orphan characters who just came to life straight from a book. One thing about Americans, poor or not - they do know what the deal is with the Cheesecake Factory

Also, I haven’t been in a long time, but most of that class of chain restaurants are shadows of their former selves. I get the impression that it’s actually held on better than most but I’m not sure.

Just scrolling lists of ballads copyrighted in London in the 1500s and 1600s, for fun. Would love to listen songs like “The Repulsive Maid” or “A Brief Discourse of Four Cruel Murders”

More song titles: - Certaine verses or a songe in Prayse of A Pott of good Ale - Combat Betwene a Man And His Wyfe for the Breches, a Pleasant Ballad - The Distressed Virgin - A Dolefull Ditty of a Lamentable Act Done by a Woman Upon Her Husband and Child at Mantua in Italye

Alright motherfuckers, time for episode 8 of Lanterns, where my most hated and overused movie or show prop, generic beer bottles, makes another appearance.

Was busy cutting up a big-ass pomelo to have half of by myself, but nice to see a flashback to a young Hal at the start of episode 7 of Lanterns. Shame it reveals his dad was low-key sexist and further shame if we don't see how an adult Hal became a jaded burnout.

I got unemployment insurance twice, once in California and once in Virginia. In California it was very bureaucratic and if you needed to call someone on the phone it took like 45 minutes. In Virginia all the forms were wrong and out of date and the website help started with this lecture:

There's this concept that unemployed people should "treat looking for a job like it's full time work" that doesn't really survive first contact with the *actual* labor market. There are very quickly diminishing returns to looking for work.

When I was getting unemployment, it was for temporary furloughs, not for being out of work. But all of the basic instructions were for people who were laid off and looking for a new job.

In CA that meant finding obscure docs deep in the website. In VA I just had to file wrong documents then keep calling different people in different offices and convince them that I was doing what they told me to do.

Things like getting my address registered for utilities, or getting my car inspected, involved dealing with some difficult personalities with their own little fiefdoms within the govt

In CA dealing with local govt is more like dealing with McDonalds. Everyone knows there’s some shady stuff happening behind the scenes, and the workers don’t even try to nice, but if you’re there for a burger, you can get the burger. You don’t have to convince anyone to help you.

The two places I’ve lived as a grownup are Los Angeles and Charlottesville VA, and it’s really something how different dealing with state and local govt is. Even in liberal Charlottesville there’s a southern attitude coming from within the gov towards anyone who wants gov services from them

This 19th c lady’s multitool was found in the pocket(!) of an antique (1872) garment donated to the historic clothing archive at my employer. It features a button hook for fitted gloves and a tiny corkscrew. The corkscrew is too small for wine & was probably intended to open apothecary bottles.

Movie pitch: a big action disaster movie set at the Olympics. The group of survivors all have to work together with their different sport skills to survive. Pole vaulting and deadlifting and shit. Maybe the shot putter can throw a tiny gymnast across a chasm or something.

One of the Olympic archers turns out to be evil and is firing arrows at them. At the end the hero has to let go of their gold medal to save a hated rival.

As a Californian, I have to say that I have seen this at least a couple of times

Erik Hane@erikhane.bsky.social

Okay sure California doesn’t actually literally do this. But spiritually you do. Admit it. You people in California are always getting up to some shit like this

They put the whole thing on the griddle with a ton of butter or grease or something and and the cut part of the bun soaks it up and then gets crispy. It’s pretty good.

I need to talk to my kid about politics more. I’ve kind of downplayed it or put it off for a lot of reasons, but it’s finding him anyway and has been for a long time.

So yeah, it probably would have been better to talk to him about these things *befofe* he found himself in high stress emergency situations involving them. Gonna try to do that.

A house by his school bus stop recently put up a giant Israeli flag, and this morning he cheerfully told me “I think someone Jewish lives there!” So I guess I know what we’re talking about next. 😬

There are things we’ve had to talk about. He’s been very worried about it Trump ever since the ice raids around town last year, which had a palpable effect on our life. I don’t think he really knew who Trump was before that.

And we’ve had to talk about transphobia and homophobia of course, as we have trans and gay friends, and he once had to shelter in place at his school when someone called in a threat over an assembly with an educational drag performer, so he naturally started connecting those dots

So after doing a little more reading I think I’m wrong about this. It’s true that the minions mourned Kevin after he ate the giant bomb and exploded, but the consensus seems to be that the minions only *think* they can be killed. In the extended canon they survived a fire that broke the moon.
