⭐ After quite some time in the making, I’m excited to share our new paper!🌿⭐ We examined people's climate-relevant behaviors (driving, air travel, public transport use, and meat consumption) and their perceptions of how feasible it would be to change them (+ expected wellbeing impacts). 🧵(1/4)

Further robust evidence suggesting green nudges at the individual level are unlikely to make a difference. As we recently suggested, it is time to abandon the prevailing success focus and rather think of this body of evidence as pointing to the many structural constraints people are facing, and

Accordingly, we advocate for a broader role for behavioral science in public policy - a role that also includes diagnosing structural constraints, co-designing structural solutions, and helping overcome barriers to structural policy support.

Igniting a fire in a wet environment is hard, isn't it? 🔥🌧️ Likewise, even the best-designed interventions struggle in everyday settings where choice environments are structurally misaligned with policy goals, such as in areas like reducing obesity or carbon emissions.

We propose a more holistic view-one that recognizes the diagnostic potential and policy relevance of unsuccessful behavioral interventions. When behavior change fails despite good design, it often points to deeper structural constraints. These failures may justify stronger, systemic policy measures.

🪧New Preprint led by @saschakuhn.bsky.social on the connection between climate policy support and macro- (country-level) variation in e.g., economic freedom, per capita emissions, income inequality, and climate vulnerability, building on data from the Many Labs Climate Project!

🧵New preprint out: How do macro-level structures shape public acceptance of climate policies? We explore this question using the ICPC #ManyLabs data across 63 countries. Beyond individual beliefs, how do structural conditions like inequality, fossil dependence, or neoliberalism shape support? [1/]

Why this matters: Political decision-making is often shaped by perceived public opinion. When policymakers underestimate public support for climate action - that is, they misread the “signal” - ambitious climate policies are less likely to be proposed or championed.

🏛️Finally, we asked >1,500 policymakers from Germany - from the federal, state, and municipal levels - the same question regarding their perceived support. This allowed us to compare: 1️⃣Actual public support with 2️⃣Citizens' estimates of public support and 3️⃣Policymakers’ estimates of public support

Key Findings: Citizens underestimate how much others support climate action, replicating earlier work on pluralistic ignorance✅ 👉 but: Politicians show even greater underestimation (particularly regarding people's support for taxes, laws, and also their willingness to contribute 1% of income).

What did we do? First, we collected representative data on citizens' actual support for various policy measures (information, taxes, laws) to combat climate change.🌍 To test for pluralistic ignorance, we then asked these same citizens how much support they think there is for such measures.

🌍 When and why do people—and policymakers—recognize the structural roots of unsustainable consumption and support systemic solutions to fight climate change? Thrilled and grateful to explore structural influences and policy support in my new ERC Advanced Grant (SUSCON). #ERCadG #BehavioralScience

Across four studies, we validated the scale in two domains. SAS showed good internal consistency and was meaningfully related to policy support and related variables, and distinct from individualizing constructs such as trait self-control or self-efficacy.

In doing so, we were guided by the idea that people may - to varying extent - infer structural constraints from observable cues such as (low) availability, accessibility, affordability, normativity and the influence of systemic agents on choice. 👀 The final result was a 13-item scale.
