Happy to share this work!

What does a good computational thinking assessment look like for young children? Chungsoo Na, Jody Clarke-Midura, Wilhelmina van Dijk, and Lingna Xu explore this in a new systematic review. Now published in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning! Link: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

My plan in 2021 when I moved to USU: get tenured and run the Bear100. -- 1 Down, 1 to go (hopefully coming this Spring! If you're in the market for a Hundo, highly recommend the Bear... magical fall forest vibes!

Is it normal for colleagues to have doc students work on projects (that are not their advisees) without checking in with the advisors? Was told yesterday "I'm sorry I didn't read your mind on what you wanted" ... #AcademicSky

Representing Utah State University at the Education Opening Ceremony of Utah 2034 - Education Committee in Cache County School District... I got the hold the official winter olympics torch! The initiative champions school belonging and academics, with a focus on reading engagement. Bring it on!

This (from OpenAI's official demo) is one of the worst chart crimes I've ever seen

Joshua Benton@joshuabenton.com

GPT-5 is so amazing it can make 52.8 higher than 69.1 on a bar chart It can even make 69.1 and 30.8 THE SAME SIZE

Another successful defense in the MERIT lab! We are excited for Laura Lema's minting as Master of Science in Special Education. She'll be continuing her amazing work at TAESE and the NRCP! (As a bonus I got to hold our new department baby!)

SO excited to see everyone there!

This one is fun for me. Today I am working on my slides for the 4 day @dmdsworkshop.bsky.social workshop that starts next Monday in Nashville! Excited to meet our new cohort and to hang out with my fellow presenters (Tara, @willavandijk.bsky.social, Jess, Sara, @schotz.bsky.social, & Jeffrey)!

Indian food and conversations about special education from our very diverse lab! Represented are Nigeria, South Korea, UK, the Netherlands, and the US. We also celebrated Ms. Melissa and almost Ms. Laura (defending in 3 weeks). Bring on the summer!

Thanks for having me at the MERIT Lab end-of-semester party! Very thoughtful discussions :) @willavandijk.bsky.social @estherodus.bsky.social

Following an INSANE win by Florida in the NCAA basketball....I won big! Congrats to my Co-Is and I for getting a NOA from NSF for our capacity building grant to investigate support networks of general and special education math teachers in secondary schools in Utah! #academicSky #NSF #grants

Meet Melissa Garside MEd! Melissa did great work implementing DBI and DBDM coaching in her district. This was a wonderful professional portfolio coming out of the MERIT lab! Kaitlin and I are proud advisors.

This was a fun paper to work on!

Jason Chow@jchow.bsky.social

New paper with Garret Hall and colleagues that reviews links between the triple code model (math) & the triangle framework (reading) as a part of the special issue on numerical & math cognition. Parallel Models of Reading and Numerical Cognition (open access: psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202...)

Submit a proposal for the Council for Learning Disabilities conference—a smaller conference with amazing discussions, feedback, and collaboration! More info: council-for-learning-disabilities.org/cld-annual-c...

It's mid Spring semester, but my course materials are due for Fall. Any recommendations on textbooks for systematic reviews (particular in the education/disability field). #AcademicSky #SystematicReview

sometimes life is hard and you don't see the point of keeping going. I feel like that with an academic job in special education rn. But... then your students remind you exactly why. It's for them. i still need to make sure they are wonderful at teaching reading to students with disabilities.

Idea for a survey study. Let’s see if I’m onto something. Reply in comments or DM if you work @ a reading clinic affiliated with a university. Do you use a commercially-available program. If yes: What program? Did you sign an agreement that you wouldn’t research the efficacy of the program?

DOE is canceling already funded grants. Just found out one at UMD that started in 2022 for school administrators/leaders was pulled, with some nasty "cease and desist" language to boot. And UNF had one to pulled that was started in 2022 to build a teacher pipeline.

Hearing from a govt contractor that Dept of Education is terminating What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) contracts. WWC is a website that rigorously evaluates education policies, programs, and products to determine what's effective and not. It's an invaluable tool for school, district, state leaders
