Arab poets wrote odes to Norman kings. Norman architects built churches with Islamic geometric decoration and Byzantine mosaics. It lasted barely a century and nothing quite like it has existed since. @peterfrankopan.bsky.social on what it produced — and why it ended. linktr.ee/empirepoduk

The Normans conquered England, occupied southern Italy, seized Sicily and Antioch from the Arabs, and carved out kingdoms in the Holy Land. They were some of the most astonishing people in medieval history. Final two episodes of our Norman series with @peterfrankopan out now🎙️ linktr.ee/empirepoduk

This was an eye-opening and sometimes hilarious series covering the Frankopan conquest of @empirepoduk.bsky.social along with Normans doing much more than conquering out-of-the-way islands with dismal weather.
