As I’ve said before, and am even more confident of now: those bike lanes aren’t coming out east of Jane. I don’t think Ford was serious before, he sure as shit isn’t going to do it now. #TOpoli

Gonna try something: A couple of under-discussed reasons Albertans feel alienated from Canada: 1) They are TOLD over and over again that they feel alienated. People, to a significant extent, feel how they are told to feel by people they trust or how they think is expected of them by their peers.

To reverse my usual schtick, conservatives who claim to believe getting their way on immigration is an existential issue for the viability of western civilization are weirdly unwilling to pursue that goal by eschewing flagrant corruption or being more moderate on taxes & health care.

So... I'm basically a reply guy but having seen YCSE as someone who followed-along with Theranos as it happened, and understands Startup Culture reasonably well, I feel compelled to add to the discourse about the Holmes Rehab discourse Not specific about the movie, no spoilers, but YMMV

In the actual version of the story detailed in Bad Blood and in Court, there is a big difference between what Liz and Sunny did when compared to someone like, say the Jucero guy or some 'fake it until you make it' founders who actually find product-market fit. On the other, other, other hand...

If you look at Elon Musk, he's definitely lied more and destroyed more lives than Liz ever did, and he's still walking free. Sympathy for Holmes is a classic version of a good storyteller (Liz) trying to convince the us that they should be redeemed because justice is uneven and capricious

She may or may not be a sociopath, or on the spectrum, but fundamentally THE thing that they think is an injustice is that she is being singled out, it's just not something you say directly.

It's not just her, there are a lot influential people saying it's "not fair" that they threw the book at her. The crazy thing is that they sort of have a point, at least they have a point cliffs notes version of the Theranos story.

Liz knows she lied, and is willing to lie about that because, at the end of the day, she's manipulative. THE key to understanding all of it is that she, and her network, know a lot of Silicon Valley startup people and simply don't believe they did anything worse than many of her peers.

I mean obviously this lady can read, she passed the bar somewhere. What I think is happening here is that she is *just* old enough to maybe need reading glasses and refuses to use them

😬 Katie Zacharia's first press briefing was brutally bad 😬 Trump managed to find a press secretary who can barely read, but she does have the number one qualification -- looking like Ivanka Here's a supercut from Zacharia's first briefing, which made Karoline Leavitt seem like Ronald Reagan

Move over Joe-Rogan-Of-The-Left we’ve got something better.

Back in my day the reason we made Eng students take humanities courses was to prove that they weren’t functionally illiterate. Where did this civic virtue stuff come from lol

Wanting engineers to have a broader education is perfectly reasonable. Treating your theatre department as a conscience factory is fucking insufferable.

Europe being the continent of rentiers is like the origin story for much of world history.

Xan López@xanlopez.net

Europe is a continent of old rentiers terrified of migrants and cruel to children. Looks pretty bad.

for a banal example, the fact that anthropic will simultaneously publish long diatribes about the risks of AI surveillance and then contract out Claude for Palantir to resell to CBP is psychotic, and there is no reason why i should take any of their moral protests seriously while they do that.

Dancing very very VERY close to saying “OpenAI stole our almost-complete proof of Navier-Stokes from internal access to our ChatGPT sessions because they were desperate to scoop Anthropic” which is absolutely 100% a believable thing OpenAI would do right now cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/st...

Wow. We couldn't reach a deal with the country that we already have a deal with. So tariffs are increasing, including on some things that already had tariffs despite the earlier agreement? Well, who's to say which side is to blame. Probably one of those "both sides" things I hear so much about.

Dear UK, A trade agreement with the US doesn't really mean anything under Trump because he doesn't honour even the ones that he signed. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Canada

Anti-AI people: AI can only produce slop! You can’t do research with it, it’s all propoganda! Actual Mathematician: I just used it to disprove a famous 300-year-old conjecture

Increasingly think we need a ‘modernity is actually good’ political tendency. the right is putatively pro-industry and economic growth but thinks science is gay and wants to throw out vaccines for essential oils, the left putatively believes science but also embraces crank degrowth NIMBYism

What exactly is the point of Warren anymore? Her economic team that staffed Bidenworld was a massive failure, Fight Club almost tanked the chances of winning the senate this cycle with Plat, and now she can’t even say “The evil guy debased himself” Nothing left but vanity.

Elizabeth Warren@warren.senate.gov

I got to know Senator Lindsey Graham traveling with him abroad in Afghanistan and Ukraine. We had just met to renew the fight for our Big Tech bill. Even though we disagreed on much, he was always willing to negotiate, with humor and wit. My heart goes out to his loved ones.

the term 'dead cat' gets thrown about a lot, but Farage's by-election is a pure deadcatting (the by-election to draw attention away from the guilty-as-sin sleaze scandal)

The cherry on the sundae is that she's a policy wonk for Heritage, so getting this sort of coverage is part of her job, but it also speaks to how the NYT's culture pieces are basically, 'journalist interviews their friend in the same elite circles.'

Man, Bluesky is really on a heater this week. All of these stories feel like grand finale Stupid News Season beats. Stuff that should be happening August 20, yet we’re only 1 week into July! Can’t wait to see what the rest of this summer has in store.

Not a lie, a well sourced rumour, and it’s nowhere near as damaging to any of their brands as supporting Platner will be.

Not funny. And disgusting to just lie about something like that.

In the barrage of statements, this is a new statement - from Fifa.

This whole thing is very blackpilling. Even many reasonable Americans are very happy to join in on this when it is in service of an outcome they would like.
