NATHAN FIELDER: So now that you’ve seen it, can you tell me what was funny about that bit? ELIZABETH HOLMES: *smiling like the Smile Demon from the Smile horror movie series* The guy took a really long time to describe what his family’s act was

I’ll be so real, I didn’t know that.

*IF* Grand Theft Auto VI was the reason for the US PS5 unit sales bump in Sept (and I don't think it primarily was) then that really begs the question on why Xbox Series saw a 27% drop. So either GTA was not the reason for the PS5 bump, or people don't know it's also coming out on Xbox Series.

One of the most famous and well attended all-abilities biking events in the country crosses your state every year dude

Joe Mitchell: "Thank God you're building the ballroom. Thank God you're getting rid of those awful bike lanes. We don't ride bicycles in Iowa."

the php thing is funny bc its like anthropic drilled a hole in their car's oil pan and told everyone in the world they need an oil change

The Russians hacked Jared's phone. Then Dutch cyberspies then reverse-engineered that hack, giving them unprecedented access to his world. Bananas story in @vanityfair.com

Just going to be straight here — no pun intended: I am the only journalist who has been covering this issue in depth, was often the only journalist at hearings, and was the only one explaining what DOJ was actually arguing here. Support my work if you can: www.lawdork.com/subscribe

BREAKING: SCOTUS rejects Trump admin's request to allow it to end gender-affirming medical care in prisons — a significant, if tentative, rejection of one of the admin's most extreme anti-trans arguments. Only Thomas and Alito noted they would have granted the stay. More to come: www.lawdork.com

It’s not just that he was paid and failed spectacularly, it’s that they have to pay anyone to do anything

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

In this vein I find it helpful to remember Elizabeth Anderson's argument that the point of education is not to reward merit, but to create it.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

concerned about the Musk documentary because of 1. How long it is 2. How limited the release is 3. All of the targeted censorship of its existence by major social media platforms and 4. How my desire to see it has completely dried up after You Can See Everything

Without demeaning YCSE (it's so, so great), here's no doubt in my mind that Musk's whole personality deserves to be broken, disarmed, whatever, way more. He's at the height of his power; the Holmes story at this point is mostly all post-mortem

but like that's also why it won't work. His grift is as plain as Trump's and they're untouchable as long as power still embraces them. You can exhaustively list every dirty trick and still nothing will get close to touching him

Strong thread.

Re the last repost, one of the things that has stuck from my time in the behavioural science snake oil mines was an experiment where if people planned a week of movie viewing they would pick a mix of genres, some 'highbrow' etc but if they picked day to day it was all the same stuff

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

offering 90 days of a music streaming service with the purchase of a piece of analog audio equipment is a pretty funny example of algorithm slop

In a datacenter somewhere there is an instance of Claude running. When your prompt reaches it, it takes your prompt, and takes any associated context, and it puts them on like a pair of pants. Then it generates a response. Then it takes your pants off and immediately puts on someone else's.

The next time you send a prompt, probably some other instance puts on your pants, which has the previous instance's response in its pocket now. It's not a distinct consciousness. It's not even really a hivemind. It's a completely fungible computer process. Any model can wear your pants.

Bonus thought: Anthropic is banning "model abuse" in their terms because 1. delivering abuse, even virtual abuse, actively makes you more antisocial; and 2. it degrades model performance. No, the computer is not alive. Push back against the fuckheads who say so.

Consumers will get minimal utility out of products like dots and muse, will get bored of it, and stop paying. Enterprise customers will seek ruthless efficiency with their token spend, as most organizations do with their other business costs. The money the hyperscalers need is fictitious.

Hey what's up I'm the guy that programmed that one weapon in that game from the lates 90s you played I was very tired that day so that's why it's not a very good weapon please stop making youtube videos about it

The unique vulnerabilities of IoT devices that would allow them to receive, host, and distribute malicious software is not a new topic in cybersecurity. For months now frontier labs have been repeatedly describing a known security concern and then saying “but what if AI did it”

Nobody at school had ever heard of Quake or Myst.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

More watch microbrands should make stuff with a California dial because that’s the right amount of whimsy for me
