When so many people are struggling to pay their bills, the idea that the Bank of England could raise interest rates in response to meagre growth and inflation caused by Trump's disastrous war is absolute lunacy. Will making British peoples mortgage payments higher get the straight of Hormuz open?

In AI circular funding news, Nvidia has just bought back $150 billion of its own stock, leading to a 2% rise in its share price and a big boost to execs share price linked salaries. A reminder: stock buybacks were illegal until 1982 as they were considered market manipulation.

The story of the last 20 years in the West is the story of a rolling economic crisis, leading to years of grinding austerity and falling living standards, blamed on foreigners by the ruling class that caused and ultimately benefitted from the economic crisis.

This is absolutely emblematic of problems facing vast swathes of the British economy; regulators that are not only supine and toothless but which actively work on behalf of the industries they represent and against consumers. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

It feels as though the era of free content online has cost us an enormous amount culturally. Would it be better to go back to paying for news content so that the dying art of journalism as a career, let alone local newspapers, music journalism etc etc can survive?

Id do get heartily sick of social care bang equated to care for older people. 50% of people receiving social care have learning disabilities, physical disabilities or mental health issues, and those services are in as dire straights as those for older people.

Alan Milburn is introduced as a former health secretary who's done a lot of work on social mobility Milburn was a pro outsourcing health secretary who went on to make a fortune advising private companies profiting from his health 'reforms'. I wonder why Ridge didnt mention any of that?

Alan Milburn is on #bbclaurak today As Solomon Hughes wrote in this article on Milburn from 2022: "Almost 2 decades ago he was the pro PFI health secretary, now he & his family trouser millions from his consultancy work for private healthcare interests" morningstaronline.co.uk/article/f/al...

Just watched the first episode of 'The Good Life'. Tom casually remarks to Barbara that he isn't too concerned about jacking in his job because "the house is paid for". Tom is 40, works as a draughtsman and lives in a 3 bedroom detached house in Surbiton.

Just more evidence that the UKs “first past the post” voting system does not reflect the diversity of our politics. Time for a change

The same people reliably tell me that British Muslims don't have the same values as me. Yet they've just voted for a young woman, representing an unashamedly progressive party, led by a gay Jewish man.

The brass neck of "Sir" Jim Radcliffe, banging on about people on benefits, when he just received a £120 million bung from the government to keep Grangemouth open, despite the fact that he doesn't pay a penny in tax in this country. How's that for benefit scrounging?

Britain has seen an acute living standards slowdown over the past 20 years. This has affected incomes across the distribution. A typical family today would be £20,000 richer if incomes had continued growing at the same rate since 2005, when the Foundation was founded. ⤵️ buff.ly/NuhNFF9

There was another path through inflation—one that didn’t punish workers. Check out what Spain and Italy did. We could’ve done it too. buff.ly/VvVZSMG

Want to beat populism? Then you need to ensure that working class people have secure employment that offers a decent standard of living, good quality, affordable housing and good quality public services that are there when you need them. It's that fucking simple.

Here's a thought about UK inflation. The government doesn't use the RPI rate of inflation any more because it includes housing costs, which are considered too volatile. However the government's preferred measure, CPI includes air fares, which rose 22% in July because of the school holidays!

The BBC is claiming that Bob Vylans' chant of "death to the IDF" was anti-Semitic. In fact, what the BBC has done there is conflate all Jews with the state of Israel. Now thats anti semitic. All Jews are not the IDF, in the same way that all Palestinians are not Hamas.
