There's no shame in the fall of Egypt's Pound. It's the opposite actually. If you keep pegging to the Dollar like Pakistan, high inflation from rising oil prices drives your real exchange rate up and then you're really in trouble. Egypt should be proud... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/right-vers...
Really good video on the Orban system from Nick Carlson at Business Explains the World. I make a couple of short appearances. Lots of good stuff about football (soccer) corruption, oligarch cronyism--and he draws the analogies to the US www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCkS...
Nice nostalgic vibe to this year’s NFL season, 6 of 8 division-leading teams were founded in 1960 or earlier. NY, San Fran, KC, Cleveland, Buffalo—the Eisenhower years are back www.nfl.com/standings/
Something amusing about the idea of a Dutch court fining the government for failing to inspect and assign an EU-mandated energy efficiency label to the 13th-century Ridderzaal in The Hague. Draughty fireplaces, takes ages to roast a boar etc

The Russian strategy in attacks on western Ukraine is to make even “safe” areas of Ukraine feel unsafe, in order to drive Ukrainian refugees into the rest of Europe. Putin is trying to create Europe’s next refugee wave and he is responsible if it happens.

This is a really interesting piece, but I wonder about whether higher positivity about AI in the developing world is mostly about higher optimism about the future in general (and optimism-bias in question responses). It sort of looks that way. economist.com/internationa...
This was my take 3 years ago and I still think it's right, even as an RN-led France looms. The biggest problem with far-right success is that it substitutes illusory problems (immigration, EU federalism) for real ones (growth, capital union, China, Russia). www.economist.com/briefing/202...
Washington DC was an almost entirely segregated city in the 1970s-80s. It is now largely mixed, with large areas of easy racial crossover. Also restaurants and fresh produce are far better, and the murder rate is far lower than in the late 80s/early 90s
Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

It was an impossible, unearthly, censorious, simplistic and immature approach to writing, or for that matter to people in my view. But we had to work around it. Fortunately the head writer ad a couple of others were socially skilled geniuses and managed to yank, tug and navigate to a story each time

This is Superman v Batman stuff, but worse really—Supes has dilemmas, the hots for Lois etc. But it’s obvious how that kind of crap censorious story impulse would emanate out of the Church getting antsy about Lancelot’s antihero/doomed lover aspect, exactly what led all of Europe to become superfans

This is a wild take when we’re in the middle of what could turn out to be one of the largest and most catastrophic misallocations of capital in human history driven by billionaire groupthink that was caused by a shared misinformation bubble that they created on purpose.
Most billionaire wealth isn't in yachts or jewelry — that's just a few percent of it. Most is productive business capital: companies that employ people, build things, and fund research. Tax that wealth and you're taxing the businesses that employ us all. Cato's Adam Michel explains.
