Hello #PhageSky! 👋 Official home of #WorldPhageDay & #WorldPhageWeek (22-28 Oct), founded by Pida Ripley, ageofthephage.com. Honouring the pioneers who discovered bacteriophage over 100 years ago: Frederick Twort & Félix d'Hérelle. Follow for global phage research, history & therapy! 🌍

One of my favourite phage books is 'Thinking Like a Phage: The Genius of the Viruses that Infect Bacteria and Archaea ' by Merry Youle, a freelance microbiology author who inspired many. Do you have a favourite phage book?

So cool!

Over time we learned more (and more to come) about how chemotaxis drives bacteria forward, and how by killing bacteria in the center, the phage leave a zone of relatively high nutrients & chemoattractants. Bacteria migrate to this zone, and yet, it is a (moving) trap.

Spotlight on the UK phage landscape: clinical access. There is no single official national clinical phage network yet, but interest is growing. Phage therapy is currently delivered ad hoc via named-patient routes in the NHS.

Phage-UK is linking clinicians, while UK Phage Therapy and UKHSA are building supporting infrastructure (collections, matching and pathways) to move beyond one-off cases. Ref: #AgeofthePhage #WorldPhageWeek ‘ Mapping the Global Phage Landscape’ Series #WorldPhageDay #AMR #PhageTherapy #Phagesky

Alfred Hershey’s bacteriophage experiments, including the Hershey–Chase work, confirmed DNA as the genetic material of viruses. With Delbrück and Luria he received the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. #WorldPhageDay #WorldPhageWeek #Phagesky

Salvador Luria, working with Max Delbrück, showed that bacterial resistance to phage arises through spontaneous mutation. Their experiments established bacteria and bacteriophages as powerful genetic tools. Shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. #WorldPhageDay #WorldPhageWeek #phage

Max Delbrück helped transform bacteriophage research into a precise science. With Luria and Hershey he revealed fundamental principles of genetics and replication using these viruses. Shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. #WorldPhageDay #WorldPhageWeek #Phagesky

Time to celebrate the #phage and phage community working to develop the full potential of the #bacteriophage. Also an important opportunity to remember our phage Nobel Laureates. Today we focus on the contribution of three amazing phage pioneers.

Delbrück, Luria and Hershey shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning the replication mechanism and genetic structure of viruses -work that used bacteriophages to reveal fundamental principles of genetics. #WorldPhageDay #WorldPhageWeek #AgeofthePhage #Phagesky

#WorldPhageDay celebrates French-Candian, Felix d’Herelle. The second scientist credited with the discovery of the bacteriophage, he was based at the Pasteur Institute, where he was able to continue his research during WW1. He named the bacteria-eating virus ‘bacteriophage’ - the ‘phage’. #PhageSky

Canada's phage research is globally renowned, anchored by the legacy of French-Canadian d’Hérelle and Félix d’Hérelle Reference Center for Bacterial Viruses at Université Laval. One of the world's premier and longest-standing reference phage libraries. #WorldPhageWeeek -mapping the phage landscape.

Canada’s phage research community is deep and diverse. In #WorldPhageWeek we look at three key centres shaping the national landscape: the Félix d’Hérelle Reference Center, the University of Toronto Phage Initiative, and McMaster’s Farncombe Phage Research Group. Each contributes something distinct.

George Eliava recognised bacteriophage potential and worked closely with Félix d’Hérelle. In 1923 he founded the Eliava Institute in Tbilisi-where phage therapy was kept alive for decades when much of the world turned away. His vision still shapes the field. #WorldPhageDay #WorldPhageWeek #Phage

Happy @UnitedNationsDay from @AgeofthePhage, creator of #WorldPhageWeek 22-24 October! On UN Day we celebrate global cooperation. The 2024 UNGA High-Level Meeting on AMR (Political Declaration A/RES/79/2) set clear targets, including reducing AMR-related deaths by 10% by 2030.

Phage community was pleased that building on that momentum, WHO Europe’s 2025 report ‘Building the Evidence for the use of Bacteriophage Therapy’ (with the Global AMR R&D Hub) is actively advancing the case for phages as a precision tool against drug-resistant bacteria.
