We are approaching the 20GP “predictive” mark, but I already feel pretty confident about the Jets: >When 100% healthy, this is a Wild Card playoff team in a tough Central division >BUT, any injury exposes a severe lack of depth they’ve mustered and developed, especially to the top of the lineup

The Byfuglien love fest this last weekend reminded me there was nearly a timeline where Ladd signed instead, which would’ve necessitated trading Buff. And when 33 had enough, Jets spent months trying to convince him differently: same thing they did to Trouba, Maurice, Laine, Dubois, now Hellebuyck.

While there are certainly things behind closed doors we are not privy to, it just feels like Jets are quickly falling behind all the other clubs (in smaller markets, especially) after only catching up to the NHL standard when moving from Noel to Maurice, hoping things get better. Hope is not a plan.

I think the NHL is the right spot for him to continue developing today (certainly not the AHL) - but I am somewhat concerned that the surrounding environment and burden of expectations as the (paper) 2C could stunt aspects of his game going forward. I don’t trust Jets development here.

>Which leads to final point: top-to-bottom, the Jets just feel /inefficient/. From players to coaching to mgmt, I come away feeling like the sum is not greater than it’s parts, and the team is rapidly approaching the precipice of its best players no longer keeping on-ice performance afloat.

>The defence outside of 44, 54, and now 57 is trash. 4 is too volatile, 38 hasn’t appeared settled in the transition aspect, and 2 gives up more HD chances more frequently >Björck is going to be a great NHL player, showing flashes of skill and high level of understanding on both ends of the ice…

Heritage Classic Review (Production): it was all Jets nostalgia and felt high-end for the smallest Canadian NHL city Heritage Classic Review (Game): thank god they scored a goal or I would’ve become the frozen Joker

It’s in times like these that you realize that even the people criticized the most are still the top 5% of hockey players in the world, GST all showed some flash throughout the night. Meanwhile, nearly all of Ladd-Little-Wheeler were just so broken or out of shape lol

Absolute hilarity that the Jets goal scorers thus far have been all the bottom of the lineup role players

Watching Perreault play again with his stick like an épée and a bit of effort made me feel 10 years younger again. Only thing that was missing tonight was Enstrom for the 39-33 pairing. Sucks that he was on the roster at one point but didn't end up making it

How could they overshadow the historical prestige of the Heritage Classic like this

Alrighty then. This seems newsy. Keep it locked to illegalcurve.com for when something happens.

Hellebuyck really respecting the tradition and *checks notes* 23 years of history of the Heritage Classic

Dave Minuk@icdave.bsky.social

“I hope they know I care about them.” Asked if he had a message for Jets fans, Connor Hellebuyck said he has a lot to say but will wait until after the Heritage Classic out of respect for the team and the celebration of hockey. Watch: illegalcurve.com/devils-gm-su...

I didn't catch the Bombers game and when I last checked it was 3-10 and Collaros got concussed again. How much of it was Dru Brown coming in relief and playing gunslinger as opposed to being vs BC's backup's backups?

It is 24° in Winnipeg right now, feels like 27° - in 48 hours for the Heritage Classic this will change to 4° feeling like 0°. Hilarious timing

Only way I see Mercer popping off in Winnipeg is they find some chemistry with him/Vilardi and a puck-carrier. He can pass but doesn't like to carry the puck & the Jets aren't blessed with a lot of playmakers. Still waiting to see how Bjorck looks with more games tracked.

Gonna be a great day for Winnipeg sports with the Hellebuyck trade discourse and watching the Bombers try to make the playoffs against BC’s backups

Jets have perennially mid team since 2021-22 in shot possession/quality often buoyed into top 10 - and one year, 1st - largely on the back of stellar goaltending. What good is making a team better to go from 18th to 14th if you no longer have the one player that made your team the best?

I think you're being a bit too pessimistic. It's a good deal that makes them a better team today and in the future. It doesn't include a blockbuster piece coming back but that was never a realistic option in the first place. Plugging holes is perfectly fine as long as you keep plugging them.

I think my point is that in their effort to have both, they’ll get neither. If they wanted roster players to compete and win now, then that trade needed to happen in the Summer before rosters were set. If they wanted future prospects to raise the ceiling later, they could’ve waited… (1/3)

…as long as they needed to in order to get true star potential, but would have to accept letting go of current roster players too - of which they’re obviously unwilling. They could’ve been an intermediary too, akin to what OTT did in Tkachuk > picks > Eklund. (2/3)

This all-in-one package is like a gift basket: an assortment of everything, but truly nothing premium. I come away feeling that they don’t really have a plan other than the one they had when the Jets returned 15 years ago to strip down and rebuild; they’re just plugging holes as they go. (3/3)

Initial reaction: yet again the Jets try to straddle the line of “compete now” and “draft and develop for the future” and will end up in the murky middle of achieving neither.

They had the best goalie ever, yet the trade was the equivalent of a quarter and a bunch of dimes for a dollar, of which won’t be spent now or properly invested in for the future. Truly the actions of a team stuck in purgatory, with hope as a plan.

>Daws: lol why >Mercer: another slow centre, not sure how Jets will use him without shifting Björck elsewhere >Command: seems like a guaranteed mid-6 centre as early as 2028-29, but that’s his ceiling. Probably was NJD’s best forward prospect as soon as they picked him though

>Mercer (pt2): looks like he’s played more RW with NJD as he continually got pushed down the lineup in favour of others like Evangelista >Bjugstad: lol 34-year-old LTIR, pretty much the typical trade deadline acquisition

Jack Hughes and MAGAbuyck will certainly get along well though. I’m sure Trump and Kash Patel are already trying to be present for his first game. Maybe he’ll finally get his Presidential Medal at centre ice while Trump slurs about his day for 30 minutes

No offence to the residents of New Jersey: but if he’s willing to waive his NMC for that location and team, then it’s a pretty safe bet that his motivations are largely driven by going back to the USA and being heralded for being American. Loser behaviour.

I’m gonna say it’s something like this as the main pieces: To WPG: >Mercer >Yegorov >2027 1st (worse of NJD or VGK) To NJD: >Hellebuyck >2028 3rd >Mystery third team pick To 3rd Team: >NJD player to offset Hellebuyck cap >NJD pick

If WPG can somehow snag one of NJD’s defence prospects and ship out one of their underachieving ones (not Pionk though it should be), that would set them up nicely down the road. But they’re making trades to win now, so…

New Jersey eh

WPGChief@wpgchief.bsky.social

The difference between NJD and BUF is that the Devils have some interesting defencemen prospects (Silayev, Casey), but no forwards - while Sabres is the reverse (Helenius, Östlund). Both have one good goalie prospect (Yegorov or Levi). Problem with both: their “2C” or “RHD” roster players are meh.

I spent last night in my mentions lamenting that the decision between Lowry and Barron as your 3C is for naught if they don’t have any offence to contribute… Mercer would just be yet another one of that same type and he’d probably replace Björck as the 2C

Jets realized there was literally no hype about the Heritage Classic other than the Alumni game and needed to drum up something for actual game on Sunday (which will be 50% Habs fans anyway)

Lowry is still rather good at matchups against top competition (at least in 10GP and in comparison to last season coming back from injury)… but there’s simply no offence there anymore. He’s closer to an expensive but great 4C than he is a costly but good 3C

Crills@bywayofwinnipeg.bsky.social

17 is a problem & it’s killing this team that he doesn’t fit anywhere but Arniel thinks he fits everywhere… like the guy but he doesn’t bring anything skillset wise to the table anymore

Also, there’s certainly something there with Yager, and I liked a lot of Rosén tonight as well - but that line with Lowry generated zilch offensively. Of course, a bit hard when you’re playing big minutes against DAL top 6, but even in favourable deployments they just couldn’t get or stay in the OZ

Of WPG's 10 lines at 5v5 (minimum 10 min), Björck's lines with 13+36, 13+27, and 13+62 are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in xGF/60, with 91-55-81 at 1st (according to @evolving-hockey.com). All three lines are 0% Sh%. That'll change soon, probably at the same time as Perfetti and Connor's Sh% comes down though
