The 5-year cancer survival rate is up to 70% SIDS deaths have decreased by over 50% 89% decline in tornado deaths All thanks to federal investment in science and OUR tax dollars at work!

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Tonight in the "this has never happened to me before" category: While walking down the main street in Salina, KS, a 30-something guy stopped his pickup in the middle of the street and yelled at me to tell me that he liked my beard.

You can't out-ouroboros the ACC.

The SEC's argument is "all our teams are so good that we end up with a deceptive number of losses on our records." That works when they beat each other by a little. But the transitive wheel of doom is beating the shit out of itself lol

I knew the Canes' offense was gonna be good this year but this is ridiculous

Post, wheel, rail. Really trying to flood the whole continent.

When I was a kid, I recall friends' parents and other adults throwing "over the hill" themed 40th birthday parties, where the entire decor was this morbid production with black balloons and a strong "death is coming for you" motif. Does anyone still do this?

I grew up 20 mins outside of Blacksburg, and it never seemed that far away from the rest of the world until I got older. VA is both deceptively large and disconnected west of the Blue Ridge. It's getting better - Roanoke has Amtrak service now, and it is expanding into the NRV early next year.

It's astonishing how far Blacksburg, VA is from every other place. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've thought to myself, "Oh I'll drive down there for a game," assumed I was within a two-hour drive and discovered "oh actually it's still three hours from here"

That said, you still have to go to Roanoke (45-60mins) to get to an airport w/commercial service. Is there an FBS school further from an airport? NMSU, maybe? The real kicker though, is that you can drive west for another 4-5 hours and still be in Virginia.

Outstanding news for a fleet that has more than earned their stripes over the last 50 years.

Senate Commerce Dems@commerce.senate.gov

Big bipartisan win: The Hurricane Hunter Aircraft Recapitalization Act unanimously passed the Commerce Committee. NOAA's Hurricane Hunter fleet is over 50 years old. This bill authorizes $2.5B for up to 9 new aircraft to keep communities safe. www.commerce.senate.gov/press/dem/re...

Hear me out: the How I Met Your Mother finale was a superb piece of TV. Even a decade later, I don't understand how people can be mad at the writing. Maybe knowing what's coming is the key? The buildup over the final season hits even harder when you know how fleeting his time with Traci becomes.

Actively tearing down the US research enterprise is a disaster for the country.

This is nothing new, but there's something unsettling about checking my flood risk on the FEMA Flood Insurance maps and being told that I am in an area of reduced risk due to a levee. I understand the benefits, but I also have some knowledge of what happens when levees fail. That's still risky.

Pitt takes down Vanderbilt, followed by a WashU (WUSTL) win over Toronto B. Pitt is back for a match with UCLA. Amusingly, Pitt has been collecting the team name cards from other teams, so they are now displaying "UCLA" on their table.
