This is an excellent piece and emphasises the point that AI helps you do more of what you do anyway, faster. If the "goal" of writing the essay is to get it done and get back to what you really want to be doing and tick some meaningless certification box, then sure, AI gets it done faster.

A curious benefit of AI might be that we can't hide from this reality any more. Or rather, it will be obvious to everyone that we are trying to hide it. Whether anyone cares enough to change is a different matter.

But maybe picking up 40k of debt to spend some time in average-to-poor accommodation while AI writes essays for you and employers don't care about your degree will look less appealing to the students of tomorrow.

If you want to learn, understand, develop facility and technique, then, AI or no AI, you have to put the human part in. Perverse incentives from organizational goals are perverse regardless of *how* they are realised. AI amplifies that and makes it abundantly clear what is going on.

Stop what you are doing and look at this lovely story. A photography student in the 80s took pictures of punks and mods on the street in Preston. He’s now tracked them down and photographed them again. The pictures and stories are really ❤️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

I am slightly surprised that mathematicians are not responding differently to the recent solutions AI has found to assorted problems. It's never been about the solution per se (except in purely applied terms), or who specifically found and published it (except for kudos and what goes with that).

What's important is understanding *how* the solution operates and the implications of that. Partly so you can approach other problems with these tools, but *mainly* to share our deeper understanding of the universe we live in. Maths is not "tick, right answer, move on". AI doesn't do philosophy.

My last oven but one had a missing button that made it literally impossible. The oven after that had settings menus and hid the option deep within configuration. This oven has a button you press to set/advance, then plus and minus buttons to change the hour, then the minutes. #ovenClockBulletin

I would like to thank @unamccormack.bsky.social for reading my contribution to Target Book Day. It was beautifully read. I shall endeavour to overcome my stage fright should there be a next time! An explanation of what Una read - it was a DW 'story' made up of chapter titles from Target Books.

I know lots of people get very miserable as the nights draw in and the days are short, but I always feel cosy in the autumn and winter. Also, I never like BST. My brain constantly recalculates the "right" time. All of which means "happy clocks going back day" for those who celebrate.

Also paper tape is way easier to work with than plastic. I live off paper tape acquired for the house move. It is particularly great at resealing packets of dry goods.

Little Green Space 🐝@lgspace.bsky.social

Traditional plastic tape (eg Sellotape) isn't recyclable – and if you put tape-covered wrapping paper in the recycling bin, it can contaminate the paper recycling. Using recyclable paper tape like this is one solution! More: littlegreenspace.org.uk/reviews/casc...

Here's another post I wrote shortly after I was told to pick which staff I'd need to keep on. Several of us took voluntary pay cuts so that we could keep most of them. This is one of the reasons I feel for all those in the games industry at the moment. They're not the only industry run by sharks.

I am very much enjoying Kill Jackie. It is not at all what I was expecting and all the better for it. I think there is probably slightly too much live-action gore for the daughter which is a shame because they'd probably enjoy it too. (No more gore than the Anime they watch but that's animation.)

Interesting to see that the decline was sharpest in the 60s and 70s, slowed considerably in the 1980s and 1990s, sped up again in the 2000s, and has slowed substantially since the 2010s.

It’s very important to internalise that manufacturing has not been in decline since 1950, manufacturing *employment* has been in decline since 1950 and much of the decline happened when output growth was strongest.

My guess (and that of a lot of others, I imagine) would have been that it sped up in the 1980s under Thatcher and the rise of computer automation, but that's actually when we felt it rather than when the worst of it happened.

Can you help #DoctorWho #TargetBookClub? BBC Books had organised a Target Book Shop but it's fallen through. Do you know a cuddly trader who'd like a free table to sell Dr Who books? Maybe old Targets like the market stalls of our childhood?

My guess is that they have failed to understand how to run something like R4 Extra for 2s6d a day. Because they have to run it like the BBC with layers of editors, management, engineering etc etc.

Ian Martin@ianmartin.bsky.social

Come on, how much does it cost to run Radio 4 Extra? Like half a crown a day? They're fucking repeats. We ought to be massively funding the BBC for the same reason we should be protecting our universities. Soft power makes money. #REFUNDTHEBBC #SCRAPTHELICENCEFEEBYALLMEANSBUTPUMPITINYOUFUCKINGTWITS

If you're going to shit on anything it's any Labour MP claiming that the country is still a bastion for LGBT right because, fuck me, fucking hell, what do you think is going on

It took me a very long time to realise that my politics are basically those of the left (and often quite radically so, even more so after the clear disaster of post-70s investment capitalism). This is because most of the voices of the Left spent more time telling me what they were against, not for.

John C@badsocialism.bsky.social

Obviously a lot of people aren't going to read this because it's published by Liberal Currents and is largely aimed at the Dirtbag Left tendency but @goldwagnathan.bsky.social is constantly making really vital points here

Distinguishing between the noisy voices of left and right, and intelligent left-informed policy that will radically address the big problems of today (from Russian Imperial aggression, to climate change, to populist, racist demagoguery, to LGBTQ+ human rights violations)? That is quite difficult.

Another amazing thing about Elizabeth Devereux-Rochester is that, when her circuit was incredibly worried that she'd be blown, she didn't go back to England. Instead she went to stay with her mum in Paris, and got interned in a spa Hotel. Which indicates that the Gestapo had no idea she was SOE.
