I go here and there. Sometimes I take pictures while I’m there.

Had to make use of Canadian healthcare today. I’ve got a tickly little cough that just won’t clear up so apparently I need to take something for that. Anyways, I just went to a clinic near my house; in and out in 10 minutes with a prescription. Out of pocket cost $0

Went to a pharmacy to fill the prescription. Took 15 minutes. Out of pocket cost a $1 dispensing fee. That’s all well and good, but here’s the better part; if I was on a low fixed income, if I lost my job or hadn’t been able to work for years I would have received the exact same level of service.

Yes the system could be better. Yet it could be quicker. Yes it could be more efficient. But today makes me happy to pay my taxes - universal health care should be a right.

The HBO documentary series “100 Foot Wave” revolves around a group of surfers who come across monster waves near Nazaré, Portugal. We flew over it the other day. It wasn’t a big wave day, but you can see the potential. #surfing

On this day in 1854, at Balaclava, in Crimea, a battlefield miscommunication led a brigade of British cavalry to make a suicidal frontal attack against Russian artillery. #history

The so-called Charge of the Light Brigade was a scandal at the time, and was immortalized by the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It’s summed up by his famous lines; “Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die.”

A first for me… a double oceanic. We exited oceanic airspace near Ireland then had to call up and get a clearance to re-enter for a short stretch just west of the Bay of Biscay. #avgeek

Are younger folks genuinely offended by the 👍 emoji, or is it just an engagement-bait argument? I use it frequently without intending any offence. It’s an efficient way to acknowledge something or to signal understanding, especially when the conversation is more data-driven.

If someone said “I’m feeling very sad today” then I’m not flashing them a 👍, but it seems like a perfectly valid acknowledgement to “I’ll meet you in the lobby at noon”.

Or do younger folks contextualize it based on who they’re talking to? A 👍 from a contemporary is a dismissive “whatever” but from an old GenXer (like me) it’s a simple affirmative?

This tracks. I’ve been avoiding US travel for a couple years now and I boycott US products and services where I can find an alternative. Even when I have to go to the US for work I make a point of not spending any money. #elbowsup globalnews.ca/news/1211323...

The business class pods are a comfortable way to travel, but they have a habit of eating personal electronic devices. It’s a Rube Goldberg assortment of machinery under those things, so maintenance personnel are required to do some seat surgery to retrieve lost items. #avgeek

On this day in 1805, as HMS Victory became closely engaged with the French fleet, Admiral Horatio Nelson was shot by a sharpshooter in Redoutable’s tops. The ball went through his shoulder and lung and lodged in his spine. He was taken below decks; it took him hours to die.

Before finally succumbing to his wound he learned he had won the battle. He entreated the captain of the Victory, Thomas Hardy, to make sure his mistress was looked after before asking for a kiss goodbye (“Kiss me, Hardy”). His last words are recorded as “God and my country”. #history #trafalgar

Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich is the coat Horatio Nelson wore at the Battle of Trafalgar (fought on this day in 1805). Atop the left shoulder you can see the bullet hole made by the shot that killed him as he stood on the quarterdeck of HMS Victory. #history #trafalgar

Nelson himself, who spent a lifetime fighting the King’s enemies, was felled early in the battle, brought down by a sharpshooter. Rather poetically he died at the moment that his life’s work was complete.

Nelson was an excellent commander. He shared his plans with his subordinates and then trusted them to act on their own initiative. His famous signal to the fleet as the battle commenced wasn’t a series of micromanaging orders simple the exhortation “England expects that every man will do his duty”

Declared fit to fly for another year… though due to a paperwork mix-up I had to wait an extra week for the doctor’s signature. It’s been a bit stressful.

In all of their economic calculations the separatists never brought up interprovincial migration. A huge number of workers in Alberta are from the east. Which is to say the eastern provinces pay to bring these kids into the world and educate them and then Alberta reaps the benefit.

Due to some irregular operations in Madrid over the weekend we departed much later than usual. This resulted in having the sun in my eyes for hours and then a very protracted sunset over the Atlantic. Oh, I also flew close to the wreck of the Titanic. #avgeek

So… spoilers for a 60+ year old book… but if anyone is complaining that Dune is a “white saviour” story, Paul is not the hero. He’s a cautionary tale.
