The Peace of Wild Things
by
Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives might be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief.  I come into the presence  of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light.

Trump: "See that nice drape? When that comes down right now you see a very very deep hole, but in about a year and half you're gonna see a very very beautiful building. In fact, it looks so nice I think I'll leave it and save money on the doors. I believe it will be the most beautiful ballroom."

When the Supreme Court blesses the Trump administration’s disregard for the law while maintaining the appearance that the law still applies, it enables a "dual state." As @pemalevy.bsky.social writes, the "dual state" framework is how dictators exercise power while life appears mostly ordinary.

motherjones.comThe “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.Authoritarianism—but make it look like the rule of law.

I got the biggest kick out of this Red-Bellied Woodpecker holding onto feed bell to steady it with one foot. Then he ended up using both feet to pull it closer and sat in the platform feeder as a tail prop. Cracks me up!

My latest column is about how the UK, with its "sovereign" post-Brexit regulatory system, is becoming a dumping ground for toxic chemicals. Brings a lump to the throat, this patriotic self-reliance, doesn’t it? Or perhaps to the breast, stomach or liver. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

This is how our government has been corrupted: 1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office. 2) Elected officials rewrite the rules in the donors' favor. 3) Donors make a huge profit. 4) Repeat. For the sake of democracy, we must get Big Money out of politics.

You are up to date.
