Not getting a job I spent 2 months interviewing for, 6 separate interviews, after not being able to land anything in almost a year with 800+ applications is really, really, taking it out of me this time.

I don't talk here too much, but it's difficult to explain the enormity of how badly the games industry is in crisis. Since about 2022, most FTE work has dried up and most companies are only offering contract positions. This means after a year and change, you're looking for another job.

I've sent out over 800 applications since my last contract ended in October. You're lucky to get a reply at all, and it's usually an automated one. And once your resume is decorated, you can't get jobs at grocery stores or in fast food at all. "Why would I hire you when you're going to leave?"

I can't even blame them for that. But it's all just terrible. I don't see it changing any time soon, I've had to discourage peers from pursuing a career in the industry just because of how bad things are. I can only hope that someone throws me a bone and it's enough to afford meds at this point.

So... You get a one year contract at a company that barely pays your bills. You can barely save anything due to high rent from living near them, and after your contract ends you're looking for months if not a full year again. You watch your savings go up and then deplete to nothing over and over.

It's just miserable. All my goals are so far away and aren't even inching closer due how this system works currently. The only thing I can think of to escape is self-employment, but my disorders don't play nice without a structured job. And forget trying to get a job outside of the industry...

Because companies overhired during COVID but want to keep those record profits, veterans in the industry are getting laid off and new contract positions are getting created instead. This leads to mass cannibalization; vets are being forced into jobs meant for entry/mid level employees.

Every new wave of layoffs crowds the job pool. When I'm applying to a position with my measly 8 years of experience, why would the company hire me over someone with 15 for the same pay? A lot of these places are also rescinding their remote work policies and paying even less than they used to.
